Dad was from the Baltimore, Maryland area, he joined the army when he was 17 yrs. old and was married when he was nineteen. He met my mom Janice in WI at Fort McCoy.

In stories that we heard from him, he didn't sound like he was a tough sargent. He was tall, dark and very handsome, but skinny.

Comments: I am presently writing a research paper for my Master's degree in History on the Korean War. Specifically, my topic is the Canadian's public and the soldier's attitudes toward the war. I am looking for opinions of the soldiers as they enlisted and their treatment on their return home. Any thoughts you might have as to why the Korean War hasn't received the merits it deserves or why the Canadians public seem to forget about the war as soon as the soldiers left Canada.

Any information or help you can give me would be greatly appreciated as this is a topic that has not been researched and first hand accounts would certainly help substantiate my paper.

Thank you for any time you can give me.

Subject: SEEKING COURT MARTIAL INFORMATION

David Scott wrote on February 5, 2001

City and State: MANASSAS VA

Unit: HQ AIR FORCE, PENTAGON

Service or Relationship: Family Member

Comments: Recently my family was made aware of hearsay evidence my Grandfather (William Scott) was court martialed during or after the Korean War for alleged drunkeness resulting in the loss of life of those under his command or control.

William Scott was an enlisted NCO stationed at Schofield Barracks HI at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack while assigned to the 24th Infantry.

It is rumored he attained officers rank for WWII battlefield service and retained that rank as part of the occupation of Japan and into the initial Korean conflict. We think he was part of the 25th infantry at that point, but could have still been part of the 24th.

He was supposedly cashiered at a Court Martial conducted at Presidio (San Francisco CA) and sentenced to a long prison term. As part of subsequent military reviews of the trials during the appeal process, he served some number of years, but to the extent of punishment imposed by the original court.

After bumming around after his release from military prison, he supposedly committed suicide.

I am an active duty Air Force Officer assigned to the Pentagon, but please do hold that against me. My family would like to know the truth, no matter how painful.

If anyone out there can shed light on this incident, we would appreciate it...if you know anything about William Scott's WWII service, we would like to know that also because the national military personnel center fire destroyed any references we may have found at that source.

William Scott would have been viewed as an old guy to most of the Korean War veterans who were new enlisted troops at the time. There may be former officers who know something also. Please Help.

I can be contacted at office 703-601-2108 or e-mail davida.scott@pentagon.af.mil or send message to my home 14481 Idlebrook Court Manassas VA 20112

Sincerely,
David A. Scott, Major, USAF
