Comments: I am searching for any information on my grandfather, retired Maj. Horace "Jack" Houghton. He, too, refused to talk about either war and only told me a little bit about non-combat posts. I know he lied to get into the Marines and qualify for the GI bill, they found out, kicked him out cause he was too young. He used to laugh and tell me it served him right cause he later missed out on two years of Social Security. Then, he got some college under his belt - THAT was an interesting story, as apparently he was quite handsome and a bit of a rouge - and became an officer in the Army. He retired with the pay of a Lt. Colonel and the rank of Major. I do not know the timetable of his service. He especially did not like to talk about Korea - he told me it was a bloodbath and too many good men died. He mentioned the Philipines and McArthur - not too fondly, he was the head of the MPs for McArthur. He was in occupied Japan near Mt. Fuji because there was a picture of him in uniform at the house the family lived in with Mt. Fuji in the background. I know he knew the actress, Brenda Vacarro's father because my mother told me they were playmates as children. He was also stationed in Ft. Stewart fairly early in his career, I believe. In France in the mid-fifties. And, I believe he finished up his career at Ft. Dix in the late 50's. I actually was rushed to the hospital at McGuire AFB for a bad burn when I was an infant - probably 1963. Oh, and he rode horses at some point in the military 'cause it rubbed off all the hair on his inner thighs - I thought it was quite amusing as a child to see him in shorts!
I am interested in ANY info and if anyone knew him or my grandmother, Mary. She was quite beautiful and had been Miss Illinois.

The way I understand it, he kept volunteering for more and more dangerous missions so he could come home sooner. His plan was to come home and be my father, as my own father all but abandoned us. His memory has haunted me my whole life. I miss him every day. My mother by some coincidence married a man with the same last name (his cousing I think) years later, so at least I have always carried his last name. Comments: In 1987, my dad had passed away due to a sudden heart-attack six months before I got to tell him he was going to be a Grand-dad to a beautiful baby girl.My mom and dad devorced in the late 60's and I still had contact with him until 1975 we moved out of town to Newark,N.J.and completely lost contact with him, I was only about ten when I last saw him alive. But, before that I clearly remember boucing on his chest and seeing scares on his side and his chest and him telling me that he got shot first in Korea and was told he can go back to the states but he said no he didn't want to leave his Buds behind so he became a cook and they made him a Sargent. Before the end of the war his men were in a battle for few straight days of firing without stopping both sides ran out of ammo. so they went after eachother with bayonnets and he got stabbed in the side but thank GOD for our brave men he lived to tell me about it.But by the time I got mature enough to truely understand what he and our men gone through he was out of my life,forever....I wish that I can find some info on his military career without needing a credit card to log on to some of these links to help you for a fee...The way I look at it my dad paid my fee along time ago already for all Americans!!!!! Please, if you know of any free sites that can help me please e-mail me.GOD BLESS AMERICA through our U.S.military service men and women... I Salute You all forever, Thankyou...

Comments: My father, Russell Eugene Schutt, served in the Korean War but never talked to me or my siblings about that period of his life. He passed away during the Christmas season. We are all going through a very rough time in our lives, not only because of losing him, but our mom could not live without our father and she passed away on his birthday, which was Christmas Day. Both died so suddenly and so close together, we wanted to find more information about the war that he served in and maybe someone who knew him during that time.

Comments: He was a sargent. He went in upon graduation 1952 from high school. He did his his basic and then was shipped over seas. He caught the tail end of the war. He went on to serve two tours with the UN peacekeeping troops or so I was told. In 1961 with a wife and three kids he went AWOLand left us. He came back to us 2 years later and that has been the mystery of our lives. Where was he and how do we find out. I want to know. He was stationed in Ft. Louis at that time and prior to that Fort Jackson, S.C.
