Comments: I loved working for the Navy, and I like doing jigsaw puzzles. This evening I went to the site I usually work on puzzles, and there is a picture of this F4F Panther sitting on the flight deck of the USS MIDWAY that is a museum in NYC. I got VF 781 off the hull of the a/c, but not the serial number. I looked up the squadron and found this page. It's fascinating. All these stories. But I thought someone might be interested in the picture of the a/c on THEJIGSAWPUZZLES.COM. Have a good one and stay safe.

Comments: Dear Veterans and Family Members of the Bon Homme Richard CV-31 1951 Cruise
and Squadron VF- 781 'Pacemakers', et. al.

My father Lt Robert Lawrence served as a F4 Panther Jet combat pilot during the Korean War in the Reserve

My brother Doug recently found a treasure trove of 16mm film that my dad brought back from the cruise of the cruise. We had no idea this existed until Doug found it in a box in the attic of my mom's home while he was prepping to rent. This footage includes many many launching & post sortie landings of all aircraft on the carrier, including the Panther's and Corsairs, et. al. There is even combat footage taken from my dad's jet camera showing the strafing and rocketing of enemy columns. There is even a shot of a ditching short of the carrier and hellcopter rescue of the pilot. Doug has created an hour long DVD of this film which includes many still pictures as well, of the various crew of the carrier, including a shot of the entire 781 Squadron.... and a great pic of the Squadron Cmdr Collin Oveland.

If you would like a copy of this DVD, you can contact Doug at e:mail: drlsmca@cox.net and/ or by phone: 760.736.8814
You may call me also at 619.300.5520 or e-mail: gjlcco@aol.com

just joined squadron VF-781, was on the catapult of
the USS Bon Homme Richard prepairing Lt.R.D.Eccles'
F9F-2B aircraft for flight, when he was struck and
killed by the aircraft, when it was accidantally
catapulted. Four other men were injuried in the
accident. The pilot, Lt.R.D.Eccles was picked up by a
helicopter, when the F9F-2B aircraft crashed into the

Comments: I'm trying to track down any Aviation Ordnanceman who may have been assigned to VF-781 during the squadron's second Korean deployment (2nd was aboard the Oriskany). There seems to be a discrepancy between claims for the 18 Nov 1952 engagement with Soviet MiGs. David Rowlands claimed to have fired on and damaged a MiG-15. E. Royce Williams claims that this was impossible as Rowlands' guns had malfunctioned. Williams also claims to have shot down 3, maybe 4 MiGs. The second problem for Williams is that I have some frames from Rowlands' gun camera showing a smoking MiG. I'm hoping that one of the guys who loaded and/or reloaded the cannons on Rowland's F9F could settle this issue. Dave Rowlands passed away in 2000 and cannot defend his position. I believe it to be a misunderstanding...

Comments: Hi, Looking for squadron mates of my dad, (Capt.) Howard McMillan, VF 781 USNR, who would like to correspond. I grew up around Los Al and all the squadron mates. The CO then was Colin Oveland. VF 781 volunteered as a group to go to Korea and was the first F9F squadron on the BHR after re-commissioning.

I look forward to any contacts. Thanks. Gerry McMillan

Comments: I was looking to model one of the aircraft that took part in the shoot down of Russian migs on Nov 18th 1952. I would like pictures if available or at least a lead to references. I would like marking options and detail paint options if you have for either Rowlands, Williams or Middleton.

Comments: I do volunteer work at a naval museum on the naval base in Esquimalt, BC, Canada. One of the guys wants to build a model of an F9F-5 Panther of VF 781 flown by Lt JJ MacBrien on 01 Feb 53 from the USS Oriskany. Lt MacBrien was a Canadian on an exchange billet with the USN. He earned a DFC on that date and we would like to honour him with a model display at our museum. Can anyone help with the info or photos?

Comments: I am an aviation artist doing research for a
painting of four F9F5 Panthers. I have chosen
VF-781 as the squadron and plan to show the
aircraft loaded with two 1000 lb bombs and six
rockets each. Can anyone tell me if these
aircraft ever flew with this combination of
ordinance? Also, what numbers on the nose
would be accurate? Thank you.

Comments: I am trying to gather information about the air combat operations of USN squadrons in Korea. In case of VF-781 I am interested in its famous encounter with MiG’s 18 November 1952, but also any other other information about CVG-102 encounters with MiG’s, another one though not directly by VF-781 occurred 27 November 1951. Any further info on any of these encounters, by VF-781 or any squadron in CVG-102 aboard Bon Homme Richard or Oriskany, first hand or not, would be helpful.
