Comments: My father, LTJG Ralph Bernard, was the Air Intelligence Officer with VF-193 during their wartime deployment as part of CAG19 on USS ORISKANY. They were home-based at NAS Moffett Field and flew the F2H Banshee on this cruise. LTJG Bernard did a short stint on the front lines as a forward air controller during the cruise and briefed/debriefed daily missions shipboard for such notable squadron aviators as Bill Lawrence and Alan Shepherd. I am his son and am a retired Naval Aviator, serving from 1980-2000 including deployments aboard CV-41 and CVN-65. Dad left the Navy in 1955, moving his family to Balboa, CA where he resided until passing away in 2014. I currently live in Annapolis, walking distance to the Naval Academy.

Comments: Transferred to VF 193 as an Airman in 1959. On my first cruise I
worked in the pilot ready room. And during flight ops I was on the
LSO platform as a telephone talker. Right after that cruise I made
AME 3 and spent the rest of my time working on seats and oxygen
equipment. I left the Bonnie Dick and 193 in June, 1961 to return to
the states for discharge. My two good friends were Jim Campbell,
AME 3 and Jimmy Dillard, AT3.

Comments: I am trying to gather information about the air combat operations of USN squadrons in Korea. In case of VF-193 I am especially interested in any information on the several encounters between CVG-19/Princeton a/c and MiG’s 7 October 1952, in one of which Ens. John R. Shaughnessy of VF-193 was shot down and killed by a MiG –15. CVG-19 a/c also encountered MiG’s 20 August 1952. Any further info on any of these encounters, or others, first hand or not, would be helpful.

Comments: We flew down from WILLOW GROVE NAS in R4Ds. Our F-6s did a few "touch and goes" for a day on the runway at Pensacola before trying to land on board the Cabot.
We sailed down to Galvestion Texas. We took on fresh drinking water there. Never did get that Sulpher taste out of the tanks. I was in a starboard side "well" just off the flight deck during operations working as a "fly one talker" relaying information. The rest of the time I
worked on plane maintence records. We towed a yellow gunnery target some days. Had two planes go over the side, one on a "cold cat shot" the other landed missing everything including the
barrier cables. Both men survived. Sorry to hear the old girl is being cut up and scraped. Al Borland

Thomas Biesterveld.
He served on Uss Princeton navy- shot down 1950
in Korea- MIA.
He was shot down shortly after I was born and we never really found out what happened. I did talk to a dear friend of mine named Jim McRoberts (army) who was a POW for about three years. Jim said that he met Tom in one of the camps and that he was badly burned and probably could not have survived.
Ed Note: Member of VF 193 Squadron and per DPMO
died in a POW Camp.
