Comments: On 26,Oct. 1951, Lt.(jg)William Burgess of VF-54, off
of the USS Essex CV-9, had his aircraft struck by
enemy groundfire. His plane's engine stopped, and he
glided to open Sea of Japan water, and ditched within
range of enemy shore batteries. The downed pilot
rescue was made by the USS Conway DDE-507 under enemy
fire, while Lt.(jg)Ed Laney of VF-54 led rescue cover
planes which engaged in gun fire from the enemy beach
in the sucessful rescue. WELL DONE.

Comments: I am trying to gather information about the air combat operations of USN squadrons in Korea. In case of VF-54 I am especially interested in encounters with MiG’s during the November 1950 strikes on the Yalu bridges. Official archival information briefly mentions VF-52’s victory over a MiG 18 November. VF-54’s Historical Report also mentions a MiG sighting 12 November as well the MiG attack on the air group 18 November. Any futher information on this or other MiG encounters by any sdn in Valley Forge/CVG-5 at that time, first hand or not, would be helpful.
