Comments: I am looking for information about James E. Dallas AD1 VF-64 USN
He was a uncle of mine. He was from East Liverpool, Ohio. He joined the Navy sometime after Pearl Harbor. He was discharged from the Navy sometime after WWII. He joined the Navy after a brief period of time in civilian life. The exact dates unknown.
He was back in the Navy during the Quemoy and Matsu islands disputes in 1950 and was in the Navy during the Korean War. Two ships I knew he had been on were the USS YORKTOWN CVA-10 and the USS ESSEX CVA-9 but I have no idea of the dates he was on those ships. His last duty station before his death was the GOODYEAR/U.S.NAVY blimp-lighter than air complex in Akron, Ohio. Enroute to his next duty station he came down with pneumonia which took his life on 27 Apr 1959. He was 34 years old.

Comments: Ensign Ed Hofstra of VF-64, in his U-Bird, pressed a
strafing attack against North Korean troops in a
coastal armed reconnaissance sweep near Wonsan,North
Korea. He delayed his dive pull-out, for better hits,
and his Corsair hit the ground, scraping off all it's
external armament(including a napalm bomb, a fuel
tank, and eight 100-pound bombs), and bending the
propeller blades around the nose of the aircraft like
a closed flower. As the ordnance went off with a roar,
the Corsair bounced back into the air, burst into
flame, and ricocheted 500 yards offshore before
ditching in the sea. Ens. Ed Hofstra spent the next
three hours paddling frantically away from the enemy
shore, in his life-raft, before a Royal Air Force
Sunderland Flying Boat rescued him.
