Comments: Looking for anyone that served with my late father on the Lady O during the Korean War. His name was Joe Franklin Ashley. He passed away a few years ago, but I've been trying to find anyone that may remember or have served with him. He always told me about his time on the USS Oriskany. He was on her when they went around the Horn the first time. He got to back aboard her when they towed her into Corpus Christi to clean her up before they scuttled her off the coast of Florida. We watched her sink and he cried. He told me, I never thought I'd live to see the day that boat sank to the bottom of the ocean... Although he remained in service until he retired in 1976, his time on CVA-34 seemed to be him most cherished memory. If you remember serving with a Joe Franklin Ashley from Corpus Christi, TX, please contact me.

Comments: I was a member of the Marine Detachment on board the Oriskany in 1955 off Korea when at night a pilot ignored a wave-off and slammed into the aft edge of the flight deck. The plane broke into two pieces; the cockpit portion skidded down the flight deck, but the after portion of the plane slammed into the berthing area just under the flight deck and sloshed burning jet fuel over many of the sailors who were in their bunks. I helped several of the casualties who were evacuated from the fire.
Is there anyone out there who remembers this incident and can give me the exact date it occurred?
