Comments: I'm a cousin of Nathan. He was killed in the catapult explosion in Boston Harbor on 16 Oct 1953 when the Leyte was being refitted. I'm trying to put his life down on paper and since that direct line is now all gone, so went any pictures of him with exception of the one very bad shot I have from our local newspaper that carried his story. If anyone has any service photos of Nathan or any stories of him I'd be very grateful. Sincerely, Allen D. Jackson, USAF Retired

Comments: In 2003, when I was just a wee lad, I made an entry on this site regarding my great-grandfather, Henry Podhradsky. He served upon the USS Leyte.

I regret to inform any past friends or colleagues that my great-grandfather passed away, peacefully, at the age of 88 on January 5th, 2015. Never have I known a man so influential upon my life - save for my own father.

His obituary can be seen here:

Does anybody recall Henry? He retired as a Lt. Commander, and I'm unsure the years he served upon the Leyte, or what rank he was. Hoping to make a connection here.

ship crewmembers could not save him. Would like to know if he

went down with the plane, was buried at sea, or was his body

recovered, returned home for burial. Am also looking for his

Rank. This happened in the Mediterranean Sea.

I would like details of this for his part in our family

Comments: Lieut. Leonard M. DeRose was an officer aboard the USS Leyte during the 1953 Boston explosion. He was instrumental in saving the lives of eleven shipmates despite he himself being burned beyond recognition. He died shortly after their rescue.
As a friend of his sister and her family, I am attempting to gather additional information regarding the incident. So far the only significant facts are from a Time Magazine article that can be read at "DISASTERS: Tragedy for a Leading Lady - TIME" at
   http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,818969,00.html

I believe that there might also have been an article in one of the Boston papers.
Any additional information that can be provided would be greatly appreciated.
I was deeply and profoundly touched when I first learned of this story. I'm not certain that Lieut. DeRose was ever awarded a medal posthumously. If not, he should be, even after 63 years.

finishing boot camp he came home for at couple of weeks and was then deployed to Boston Harbor for service on the USS Leyte. He had only been aboard for a couple of weeks when there was an explosion below decks of the Leyte, and Joe was killed. He was 18 years old. We grew up together and fought the Japs and Hitler from the vacant lots around our neighborhood in East Texas. Joe had an older brother that was killed during WWII and who was buried at sea. He was a fine example of an American Youth ready to die for their country.

Comments: Just wanted to let everyone know that my Dad, Carl Moore Stroupe passed away April 12, 2006. He loved the ship and all of the reunions that he and my Mom attended. Thank you to all of his friends that made his time in the service so wonderful.

Comments: Hello Again,
Just an added note, dad was also called "Bunky" Wiseman, and had told me before he died that he was an anti aircraft gunner during Korea, aboard the Leyte.
Thanks Again! Any information, or aquaintances would be greatly appreciated to respond. :-)
