Comments: My father Gilbert Chief Louis Duncan was aboard the USS Essex from January 1960 and May 1960 to August 1960. He was a Chief Mechanist's Mate Petty Officer.

I was wondering if you would have any information on him during that time period, pictures, stories, etc.

Thank you

Comments: Will be traveling to the California Coast and want to tour a Naval Base that my dad served in during the Korean War. He did 3 tours. He was a mechanic on planes and loaded bombs on ships. I know he was on a USS the Essex I think it was a C-V9? I But he did 3 tours so I assume he was on 3 different vessels. I am guessing he served from 1948 till1953. His birthdate was 10/13/1930. I know he use to hitch hike up the coast on leave to Reno and San Fransisco. I think he did training at Moppet Field? Not sure just going off memory.

Comments: George (Pete) Peterson (1931-1994), he rarely ever spoke of his time in the Navy aboard the USS Essex. I would be interested in finding out what division he was in or what capacity he held. I believe he was in from 1952 to 1956, but I'm not really sure. He may have been working in the galley, or as a deckhand. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Comments: A major fuel supply center for the communist, was the
large oil refinery located at Aoji,North Korea, less
than 10 miles from the Soviet frontier, and even
closer to the North Korean, Manchurian border. The
site was beyond the range of land-based attack
aircraft. The mission was given to carrier-based
tactical aviation. On 1,Sept.1952, more than 144
aircraft from the USS Essex CVA-9, USS Princeton
CVA-37, and the USS Boxer CVA-21 carried out the
attack, (the largest aircraft carrier strike of the
Korean War.) Air attacks on industrial targets at
Munsan, and electric plants at Chongjin, were made
that same day. The missions were successful, and all
aircraft returned to their carriers safely.

Comments: Vice Adm.J.J.(Jocko)Clark,USN, was informed by ROK
Guerrillas that North Korean Commissars from four
adjoining districts were going to meet secretly at
Kapsan,Korea on 28-30 Oct.1951. High altitude photos
of the twelve major buildings and barracks at Kapsan
were ordered by Adm.Clark. Then on the morning of 29,
Oct.1951, eight USS ESSEX CV-9 USN AD-Skyraider aircraft loaded with 1.000 pound bombs, 250 pound general-purpose bombs, and napalm bombs, struck Kapsan
as the Commissars were meeting, three bombs hit squarely(on the main bomb shelter), then the planes
strafed the compound. The area was flattened into
flaming rubble. The ROC Guerrillas moved in closer to
take count; 144 party officals, and 376 enemy soldiers
killed, all 12 buildings destroyed. Enraged, the
North Korean radio announced a reward would be given
for the capture of the "Butchers of Kapsan"............

Comments: On 16,Sept.1951, a VF-172 F2H2 Banshee aircraft
unable to drop it's tail-hook, landed on the USS Essex
CV-9, leapt the flight-deck plane barriers, and trundled forward of the ship's island, on it's way to
an inevitable collision. The pilot"Lt.(jg.)John K.
Keller" presumably guessed the deck crews had already
re-fuelled and re-armed the aircraft neatly parked
along the port-side of the flight deck, for his aircraft veered sharply to starboard, ramming four
un-armed and un-refuelled aircraft, and disintegrating
in a huge fireball. Seven men were killed, twenty-
seven men were injured, and four aircraft destroyed.
With swift damage-control and ship handling, the USS
Essex CV-9 resumed air-operations the next day.------
