Comments: My wife is the step-daughter of Capt. Cecil (Kelly) Harper, who was once commanding officer of the U.S.S. Tarawa. We have two large black and white framed photos that were presented to him and hung in his home for years. The photos with frames are 24 by 28 inches, and have plaques which read FLAGSHIP COMMANDER TASK FORCE 88 ; RIO DE JANEIRO ; 20 SEPT 1958 and TARAWA-BASED S2F'S AND ICEBERG ; OFFICIAL TEST OPERATION SOUTH ATLANTIC ; 14 JULY -- 1 OCTOBER 1958. We would be happy to donate both framed photos in Kelly's name to any Tarawa-Alumni group that would appreciate them. Please contact we at my email address or at home.

Comments: I am looking for info about my grandpa who passed almost a year ago today. He was in the navy between 1955 to 1957 or 1957 to 1959 He was supposedly aboard the USS TARAWA and possibly named CV 40. His name was David Lee March, but his birth name on his birth certificate was Joseph David Lee March. His records were in the fire in st louis missouri. And he never received a pension. He was 18-20 when he got into the navy. I dont know if he was drafted or if he signed up. I would like to know his rank, job title , etc. I was able to get taps and 21 gun salute for him without any papers proving his existence in the U S Navy. Please email me ANYTHING of or about him. Thank you for any and all help/assistance received.

Comments: This is to USS Tarawa CV-40 and USS Franklin D. Roosevelt CV-42, My father Lyman Andrew Sonny Burdick passed away in 2001 while I was attending college. So, when he passed he took a lot of secrets with him. He was a Boiler Tec-Man. BT3 was his rate, and he was on B deck. I've seen some posts with others who would have been with him on the world cruse 1953-1954 aboard the USS Tarawa CV-40. I don't know much about him in general or while he was in the US Navy.
Or when he was aboard the USS Franklin D.Roosevelt.
His time in service was October-1951 to October-1959. Well, his main secret, is he did a stop in Australia for liberty/fun call. His fun left a child in Australia, which I found out is probably my oldest brother or sister. I don't know the woman or child's name, I found this out by accident, and wasn't suppose to know. I stumbled on it by accessing his military records and requested his replacement of his awards. So any information on him, while he served from fellow crew members would be greatly appreciated. And any photos, and ect. would be great, so I can share with his granddaughters, one is 20 and the other is only 5.
Thank You, for you service to our great nation and country.
Mr. K. Burdick

Comments: Hello all,
My dad, Arthur D. Bowkley, served aboard USS Tarawa before going on to NPIC in DC. He was a PH3 while aboard and I believe he did aerial photography. He told me a story about being in an aircraft that crashed into the back of his ship, he broke his wrists and needed steel plates in his head, after the crash he was standing up to his knees in avgas trying to light a cigarette. Anybody know about or remember that incident? Dad passed away almost four years ago and I'd love to get some more info about his favorite tall tale. He enlisted 11DEC51, reupped 1FEB55, and discharged 31JAN61. He did airman P school in Jax 14APR52 - 10JUN52 and PH A school in Pensacola 23JUN52 - 26SEP52.
Many thanks,
