In February of 1958, the USS Forestahl came alongside. The tugs had a hell of a time trying to get her into berth. She was huge, alongside us.

I am hoping to find out if any of my shipmates or family members are alive. I was a YN2 in the Log Room (Engineering Office). I also took oil readings from the engine rooms and was assigned to the special sea detail. Stood watches in Damage Control Central. I know it has been over 65 years ago but I still remember that day and the war years. I know it's a long shot but I was surfing the net when I came upon this page and thought it was worth a try.

I want to make an offer out to all looking for information about their family members who may have served on this ship in the years of 1952-1953. It was of great pleasure to myself that a few years back while looking for my grandfather I was placed in touch with one Jack Peters, who had actually been a very close friend with my grandfather and they served together on that ship. He shipped me to borrow his copy of the cruise book from the tour of 1952-1953. I made a digital copy of this (though not perfect as I did it by hand with a camera) and I would like to offer that anybody who may be interested in receiving a copy of this please email me and I will figure out how to get you a digitial copy.

Comments: On 3,July 1950, the USS Valley Forge CV-45, at 0500,
from the Yellow Sea, began lauching combat strikes
against hostile airfields in and around the North
Korean capital city of Pyongyang. The launch point was
only 100 miles from Chinese communist airfields on the
Shantung Peninsula, and less than 200 miles from the
Soviet Air Garrison at Port Arthur. Propeller-driven
Corsairs and Skyraiders were launched, then the F9F-3
Panther jets were launched. The sortie of these 8
Panthers marked the (first) time in aviation history
that naval jets flew in combat. The aircraft were from
CAG-5. The aircraft reached their target, and swooped
in on the enemy Yak aircraft, destroying at least 9 on
the ground, and shooting 2 out of the air. The CAG-5
aircraft demolished 3 hangers, cratered the runways,
and scored a direct hit on the field's fuel storage
facility. That afternoon, with British aircraft from
the Royal Navy's carrier HMS Triumph, hit railroad
facilities around Pyongyang, North Korea, destroying
15 locomotives, and assorted rolling stock, as well as
dropping one of the spans of a key railroad bridge
across the Taedong River. Working with the USS
Philippine Sea CV-47, and the HMS Triumph, the Happy
Valley later in July 1950, in TF-77, went into the Sea
Of Japan off the eastern coast of North Korea, and
launched aircraft for the target of The Wonsan Oil
Refining Factory, which produced 500 tons of refined
petroleum products each day. CAG-5 launched 7
Panthers, 10 F4U Corsairs, 11 AD Skyraiders, who
swooped in and destroyed the refining facility. A
tower of smoke rose, visible for 60 miles. Later when
the U.N. seized Wonsan, witnesses to the airstrike
reported that the main power plant, coke furnaces,
water tanks, air compressors, and storage
buildings, had all been destroyed, and that oil had run
in Wonsan streets as deep as two feet. The Happy
Valley strike ended production at the refinery. The
Pyongyang airstrikes decimated the North Korean Air
Force, and in so doing futher discouraged Soviet total
involvement in the air war. The destruction of the
Wonsan Oil Refinery also dealt a serious blow to the
North Korean war machine.

Comments: I am looking for anyone who knew, remembers or has pictures of my father-in-law Robert E. Kotowski. He served on the USN Valley Forge as well as the USN Antietam. I am not sure of the dates but think it is probably in the 1940's to maybe early 50's. I do not know his rank or duty but would like to find out any information I can for my husband who lost his dad a few years ago. I am trying to put together a special book for him so anything would be helpful.
Thank you
