Comments: My father always told a story of the night he and his buddies were up late playing poker. In the AM call for Mess he decided to sleep in. It was not long after his buddies all left to eat that he was knocked out of his bunk by an explosion that happened. This was May 26th 1954. He woke to find all his buddies were gone and had to spend days carry their dead bodies and wondering why he was spared. My Dad is in Heaven since 2002 and yet this story hits home every year. I am wondering if there are any photos of the Seaman on the Bennington prior to the explosion?

His description was graphic and said he had to help identify the dead men. I think he suffered PTSD as a result of this terrible accident. He was fortunate to have been brushing his teeth when it happened. "Water was rising and electrical fires were everywhere...the smell of burned skin permeated the air yet so many men just started to help the wounded". Comments: I am looking for anyone that knew my grandfather. He was a Seaman First Class on the USS Bennington - V-2-R Division. I am just looking to find someone that maybe has some old stories about him. He passed away on March 7, 2004, I would love to have more things about his millitary days (stories, fun facts, photos). I am his granddaughter and I loved him very much and would love to have some stories to tell my kids as they get older and wonder about their great grandfather. If you have any information please feel free to email me at jennifer@wfgfactor.com. Thank you

Comments: Went on board this great ship in 1955, straight
from Service School Command in Great Lakes.
The S-5 personnel were all so "reat and kind"
putting me to work, at that time, until such a time that I found my way "around" learning from
those "old timers". But I did have a great time
working and going on liberty with them.
Great Sailors doing a great job on board a great ship, on a great Navy. I hope someone among them
will remember me, along with my fond memories...

Comments: My brother Monta Lavell Humphries was on board the Uss Bennington when the explosion ocurred off the coast of Rhode Island. Just curious if anyone still living knew him. He died November 17,1998.
