Comments: I was on a training mission in late 1951 or early 1952 on the Siboney from Norfolk to Onslow Beach (Camp Lejeune) to determine the feasibility of using helicopters to land combat Marines. I was only a couple of days aboard before the short hop from ship to shore but it was much more comfortable than the cargo net and P boat route. Also it was much dryer. I took some photos of the Siboney and airborne copters using my Argus C3 but most were confiscated upon landing.

i am an army veteran, born in the 60's. i have several family members who served in the USN. i have a cruise book, from this ship, med cruise 53-54. it apparently belonged to the
vs-31 squadron ops officer LT R C Praetch( LATER LCDR) , b 10 aug 18, d. 13 may 98,R.I.P. (according to the social security admin.) it contains two 8x10 unbound silver print photos: an unknown aerial shot of some landscape, plus an aerial shot of a prop plane with NAS SQUANTUM painted on it. and a group photo of some pilots. i might part with it if someone has a scanner
to share the images with others. i don't have one.
praetch lived in yarmouth, MA and i live in boston. please feel free to write with questions. this book is really great. i have seen a CDROM of it on eBay.

Ring aboard the USS Siboney (CVE112). There was also a larger picture taken that day. It would mean the world to him (and to me as the family historian). He was decorated for his service as a pharmacy mate assigned to the Marines during WWII. I recently wrote a story of his service. I hope to hear from someone.

the name "J.H. Biewener, 5p (A) 1/c" for years I was told this was my
father's unit but he would have only been 15 in 1945 so I am trying to
get the photo to anyone who it may hold meaning - I have no idea
where it came from but my Aunt tells me she got it from my father - so
something does not add up.
I hope the photo can find a home where it willl be treasured.

Comments: My Dad Alfred Leo Rivet ("slim") served during the Korean War in the Med on the USS Siboney aircraft carrier. He joked that his job was to put up the captain's antenna when in port and take it down when leaving port and he did a bang up job guarding the trash cans on the dock. He took movies from some hidden compartment on the deck of landings and take-offs and of seamen carrying bombs back and forth and of the french and Italian countryside and the riviera and Gilbratar from the ship.
He had a plank owner certificate framed and on the wall in our den forever. He was so proud of that and we would sit for hours and look at it and I remember the mermaids and the part about Davy Jones Locker. He passed in 1990 but he also spoke fondly of that time and the men he served with.
Does anyone remember him?

Comments: My father served on the Siboney right after it was built, and I believe that may have put him on the first crew. His name is Jim Empting. Served under Capt. Ring. All through my childhood he would tell me of being a plank owner of his ship, and that when the ship was set out to pasture, he was supposed to get a plank. The ship has been scrapped for a long time now and I was wondering if he was acually supposed to get a plank, or if that just allows him to just say that he is a plank owner. I have seen his certificate that says he is a plank owner but I can't seem to find any information on this subject. Also if there is anyone that remembers Dad it would be nice to hear from you.
