All went well, and the dinner festivities were short and to the point. My wife and I were glad to be a part of it. Thank you al Seguin Association member

Comments: My Uncle Earl Slater was on-board the USS Leyte when she blew up in Boston. He was from St.Croix, US Virgin Island and is buried there. I was not alive when he died but as a youngster I remember trying to fit into his "blues". He was obviously a man of small stature, since at the time I was 13 or so and to big for his uniform even then. If you have any info about my Uncle or pictures please let me know. Thanks.

Comments: I was a water tender first class and oil king on the USS Leyte just after the shakedown cruise in 1946. I boarded the ship in Rhode Island when we took on planes. I was on board when we journeyed to Valparaiso, Chile for the inauguration of the President of Chile. Even though I should have been on terminal leave, all of a sudden I was classified "non-expendable." I was discharged from the Leyte to Norfolk, VA for the end of my service. I am also a Pearl Harbor survivor (USS Medusa) and a Navy veteran of 11 years (1941-1952). I would be interested in hearing from any of my shipmates from that time.

Comments: My father was a casualty on the USS Leyte while it was being overhauled at the Boston shipyard.

His name was Charles J. Murphy Sr.,the 37th victim of the disaster. At the time I was 7 years old and really didn't comprehend the circumstances of the explosion. I only knew I would never see my Dad again. Last year (1999) my husband and I went to the Boston Public Library and looked up all the newspaper articles we could find regarding the accident of 10/16/53. We found an abundants of information on the accident and the many medical personal, doctors and nurses, who came to the aid of the victims and their families. A delayed, God Bless to the many who gave their time and expertise. My family and I would be forever grateful to obtain additional information on the 1953 accident and also the plaque dedication in 2001.
Sincerely,
Rose

Comments: Richard got all excited when I told him what I had found on the Internet. He served aboard the Leyte from 50 to 52. Went through the Panama canal. Transferred over from the Palau (CVE-122) after being aboard her from 48-50. He worked flight deck as an airman 1st class, green hat and blue hat crews. He remembers an Indian fellow from New York, someone named Wigglesworth, John Caussey (the spelling might be wrong), and his best friend, Pat Patterson who transferred over with him from the Palau. He thinks he lives in Rhinelander, WI. Also thought he was a carpenter. He mentioned being part of task force 77. Anybody out there remember Richard Silveus from the Palau 48-50 or the Leyte 50-52?

Comments: My father, Warren Clayton Lowery, known as "Snooks" served in the Navy from 1949 (I am pretty sure) till 1953, when he was honorably discharged. He served on the USS Leyte as a Seaman. He was a Gunner's Mate. He gave me a number (service number?) of 2781152.

He passed away December 8, 1998, from complications of open heart surgery.

He told me many stories of his time on the Leyte, as well as the fun times he had in various cities (i have photos of him and his buddies in the Zig Zag Club in Germany).

I would love to hear from anyone out there who remembers my Dad or serving with him on the Leyte, as I really don't know that much about the time he spent in the service, and would lile to hear . I would also like to receive, if possible, a copy of your newsletter - if you could refer me to who I need to talk to about this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much.
