Shortly after the explosion on the Leyte, I was transferred to the Bennington. She exploded the same way, with greater damage and loss of life. I was then transferred to the USS Lake Champlain, where I finished my duty tour.

Comments: This is tough for me, it really is. My sister sent this link to me over a month ago and I just now am able to write to you all. My father was George C. Heim, the best man to ever walk the face of the planet. He was everything to all of us, friends, family, even complete strangers that had the chance to meet him, even only for a moment. He passed away on August 18, 1998 of mesothelioma, as I'm sure some others aboard did. I miss him so and regret that he won't get to know my daughter, born on August 6, 2003. Enough about that, I'm looking for info from anyone about the ship, her crew, and possibly someone who would remember my father. He was about 5'8", black hair, brown eyes, with a slim build. I will look into possible dates that he was aboard, and buddies name's and such. Thank you all that contribute to this and all boards like this. We need you. I miss you Dad, I wish you were here...

Comments: I am George's Son-in Law and Susan's Husband. Unfortunately I was only able to spend less than 2 years with George. I remember almost every minute we spent together. Most of them were after he became ill, but he never lost his sense of humour or fighting spirit. He was proud of his service aboard the Leyte, and even thou he knew that his illness was due to this service, he refused to ever say a bad word about the navy. This man was a true Patriot. His patriotism was contagious and was carried on by his wife,Mary Lou, his daughter(my wife Sue), as well as his grand daughter(our daughter Jamie).

I am currently serving in SW Asia and many times thoughts of him and his familie's patriotism get me thru the rough times.

We miss you George

Comments: My father served on the USS Leyte CV32 from 1953-1956. He was aboard the ship in the boiler room when the explosion occurred and lost alot of his buddies. He only told me the terrible story once, which was all he had to tell it. He died on August 18, 1998 from Mesothelioma, exposure to asbestos which was burning in the boiler room. He's the best person I know and he was always so proud to serve in the Navy and showed off his medals any chance we would look at them! I am more proud of him for never giving up, not once, even during his last living moments. To all his shipmates, in Heaven or on Earth, I salute you.
Signed, his daughter who misses him more each day.. Sue

I am looking for anyone who served with me during that time, particularly while we were conducting live fire exercises. I am wondering if anyone remembers what it was like firing those guns. I know that the concussion was so terrible that it was almost impossible to endure. I remember one guy by the name of last name Ogden, incurred a situation that blood was running out of his ears when the gun was fired. Another man by the name of last name Campbell suffered a hit to his face by the casing. I would appreciate anyone who served at that time would contact me or post a message.
