Comments: Looking for ANY information on I Co, 8 Cav Rgmt - combat actions, rosters, letters, photos, or other historical material etc. during Korean War. My father SFC Leonard G. Bijeau was WIA 10/16/51, the only official records we have are DD-214 separation papers. Personnel records were destroyed by fire in 1970's. Would also like information on how to obtain complete data on service history, he served in WW II and Korea spending 16 years in the Army with last duty station in Alaska.

Robert (Bob) Saxon (Podplesky) wrote on July 18, 2001

City and State: SHELBY TOWNSHIP MI

Unit:

Comments: Brother, Bob, has a newspaper clipping dated Thursday, December 14, 1972 in the now defunct "Cleveland Press". Two soldiers from the 1st Cav. flanked a poster that read: "The war began here-June 25, 1950. 38th PARALLEL. Courtesy 1st Cavalry Division."

The soldier on the right side of the poster I am sure is Sgt. Podplesky. The address book he is posing with was sent back with his personal belongings including his picture album.

My intention is to enter this information for browsers to review.

The photo was an documentary photo that was probably snapped by a journalist or is an Army Photo.

The photo appeared in "The Cleveland Press", Thursday, December 14, 1972. Its' purpose was a complimentary photo promoting Margaret Truman's Book, "Truman". Margaret Truman wrote the book characterizing President Truman's tenure as president.

If a glossy copy of that photo is available, I would like to have a copy for the family archives.

In a press release by the Army in 1950, he was listed as missing July 26, 1950. Killed in action against the enemy in Korea August 2, 1950.

The photo in question may have been taken the very same day he became missing.

I have a lot of information on his web page that may concern interested people.

Just go into the K.I.A.--M.I.A. file in the Korean War Project and do a search for Podplesky. I have five files deposited there.

Steve's younger, Bob.
