Comments: Hi,
I'm asking for my sick fatther-in-law. He was at Camp Crawford from about April or May 1953 until about October 1954. He says that his unit (I think it was the 8th Cav Reg, 3rd Bn) never set foot on Korean soil. He said that his unit did participate in amphibious exercises, but only along coastal Japan. Can anyone verify that?
My next question is this: if an individual stayed in Japan this entire period, do they qualify for the Korean War Service Medal, and United Nations Korean War Service Medal?
Please help!

We are very happy to have closure after all of these years and would appreciate any information about his time in Korea. We know that he was with the 8th Calvert Regiment, 1st Calvary Division. We were told that he was captured on November 2nd, 1950 and taken to camp 5 where he was starved to death in May 1951. His remains were buried in Hawaii as an unknown soldier and identified April 22nd, 2014. He was a Medic and Litter Bearer. Please call or email me if you know anything further. Comments: My father, Leo W. Claussen, returned home from Korea
with Sergeant stripes and a broken soul and heart. He
suffered from chronic depression for the rest of his
life. My mom said he was never the same after Korea,
retreating from life by working himself to death. He
died in 2004 from congestive heart failure.
My father never talked of Korea, and as the 'writer'
in the family I certainly requested he allow me to
tell his story several times while he was with us.
Recently my mother gave me all of his letters and a
list of the battles he was in, and I am doing what I
can to write his story.
He was in Korea from the invasion in 1950 until
Operation Piledriver in June 1951, months after
Unsan. Looking through historical sites I see that
his battalion suffered terribly during the battle of
Unsan. I know he was a squad leader by this time, and
I know my father would have suffered for each death
among his men, and those he fought beside.
Realizing I started this very late, I'm still hoping
there is someone out there that has a more detailed
narrative of Company K, 3d Btn 8th Cav 1st Division
from October 1950 to July 1951. And of course, anyone
who might have known my dad, I'd love to hear from.
Reading the requests and stories on this site have
brought tears to my eyes...and made me proud to be
the daughter of an American Serviceman.

Comments: PFC Manuel Nieves Vela was reported MIA on November 2,
1950, in the Battle of Unsan. Is there anyone who may
have crossed paths with him? His Unit was Headquarters
and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry
Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. He reenlisted after
contracting malaria while stationed at a Pacific
location. He loved horses.
Thank you,

Comments: I am looking for anyone who may have known my great-
grandpa's brother, Cpl. Edward F. Blazejewski of the
Medical Company, 8th Cavalry Regiment. He died in
action
on 11-1-50, and his remains were returned to US soil &
buried with full military honors (Purple Heart) at
Arlington Cemetery in 2007. Any pictures, even battle
stories, etc would be greatly appreciated. I am very
proud of our family's hero, and I would love to put a
face to his name. Thank you so much!!
This is his story:

Comments: I have some old photographs from the early/mid 50s. A few have names written on them. I would like to give them to the people in the photograph or to their families. Dad died 20 years ago and nobody knows the people in the pics. If you knew William (Red) Snedeger, aka Bill or Billy, while serving with him, please send me some info and I'll try to determine if you were in any of the pics. If so, I'll arrange to get them to you. God Bless you all. Look me up on facebook, too.
