Headquarters 45th Infantry Division
AP0 85
General Orders 27 July 1953
Number 453

Section I
Award of the Silver Star
Corporal CHARLES B. ROTH, RA 19446390 (then Private First Class), Infantry, United States Army, distinguished himself by gallantry in action against an armed enemy near Munun-ni, Korea. In the early morning hours of 21 June 1953, a sector of the Allied lines was attacked by a large hostile force equipped with small arms, automatic weapons, and grenades. Corporal ROTH was assistant gunner of a machine gun which proved so costly to the enemy advance that it eventually became the object of the assault. As the opposition surged forward in an attempt to silence his weapon's deadly fire, Corporal ROTH courageously remained in his position despite teh overwhelming odds, and inflicted heavy casualties upon the swarming foe. Fearing a stoppage of his overheated weapon, Corporal ROTH left the partial cover of his emplacement and, braving an intense barrage of histile [sic] fire, succeeded in stopping the Communist charge with accurate rifle and grenade fire. Although wounded by a hostile projectile during the encounter, Corporal ROTH returned to the machine gun and continued his deadly fire until the assailants were forced to withdraw. Corporal ROTH's determined and gallant actions were largely responsible for the successful repulsion of the hostile assault and reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Army. Entered the Federal service from California.

Citation

AWARD OF THE COMMENDATION RIBBON WITH MEDAL PENDANT

Corporal CHARLES B. ROTH, RA19446390, Infantry, United states Army, Company F, 179th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, is cited for meritorious service, in Korea, from 5 May 1953 to 4 September 1953. Servinge [sic] as fifleman, Corporal ROTH fulfilled his military obligations without regard for his own personal safety. He could always be relied upon to hold his position against overwhelming odds, delivering accurate and deadly fire against the enemy. His ability to follow orders resulted in a dependability that proved to be a major factor in devotion to duty and fine soldierly conduct reflect high credit upon hisself and the military service. State of entry into Federal service is California
