Comments: When were the first carrier night landings conducted? What ship conducted them? Where?
Am particularly interested in the activities of the Valley Forge and Rendova between WWII and the Korean War. My father was a Petty Officer with the landing deck/arresting wire crew - pardon my ignorance of the terminology, Dad died when I was young, so I never got to really talk to him about serving in the period between the wars. He was too young for WWII and too physically disabled in a rodeo accident one week before Korea broke out to serve again. I'm told that the Navy offered him $1,000 to re-enlist but would not take him with a cast from hip to toe.

Comments: I served aboard the Rendova during late 1949 - 52 with the quartermaster. I recieved a notice from Bill Evans 5 Mar 2000 about a USS Rendova Reunion Assiociation about a planned reunion to be held in Pensacola, Fl. in 2001. If anyone has further information about this reunion I would be interested in hearing about it. I would also like to correspond with any other shipmates.
Best Wishes -

Comments: My father, Robert H. Pirtle, served aboard the USS Rendova in 1951. He was a hospital corpsman then. He passed away in 1969 at age 47. I have some pictures of the USS Rendova on my web site at: http://www.pirtle.org/navy.html The Marine Corps squadron VMF-212 was onboard then. The pictures include the F-4Us of this squadron. I hope these pictures help in some way for those seeking information on the USS Redova.

Thanks,
Tom Pirtle

Comments: My name is Tony Yarbrough and I am looking for information about my uncle, Marvin Sydney Pleason born in Minneapolis in 1932. He was stationed in Long Beach, CA and served aboard the USS Rendova CVE-114 in the US Navy for a period until 1953 when an accident caused him to be thrown overboard without detection. His body was never recovered and listed as MIA/lost at sea.

A good friend whom he served with until his death is named "Yeshi" (last name and present whereabouts unknown).

I am seeking information about my uncle or contact with anyone who remembers him or the incident that resulted in his death. His brother, Donald Pleason also served as official photographer in the US Navy during the Korean War peace talks, but later died in his early forties from a sudden heart attach. Consequently, my family has none of Marvin's personal effects, including a death certificate from the Navy.

Any information, guidance or advise that we might receive to assist my family in obtaining information about Uncle Marvin or Yeshi would be considered a real blessing.

We do have an astonishing photo-journal that belonged to Donald that is truly museum quality as he had unprecedented access to events at the peace talks due to his official status as photographer. We are considering donating this to a museum if anyone can provide information about such an organization.

God bless,
Tony Yarbrough

Comments: I am the son of Billy Carr. He served on the Rendova and the Sicily during the korean war.
What I am trying to find is the personnel list for the Sicily from 1949 to 1951 and from the Rendova from 1951 to 1954. I would also like info on reunions and such as my Father would like to get in touch with some of his old buddies.
HE is trying toget ahold of George Pino, Teddy Norris, and Danny Townsend.
We are also trying to get all of his service medals as his were lost during a divorce from my Mother over 30 yrs. ago.
PLease if anybody can help let us know by e-mail or phone.

“On 17 November, the ship and the squadron established a new sortie record for CVEs...”

Six months later the North Korean Army crossed the 38th Parallel and RENDOVA was ordered activated.

Recommissioned 3 January 1951, she reported for duty in April and on 3 July steamed west. She arrived at Yokosuka 2 August; underwent further training off Okinawa, then on 20 September, arrived at Kobe to relieve SICILY (CVE-l18) as aircraft carrier unit under CTG 95.1.

On the 22d, she completed embarking personnel, planes (F4Us), and equipment of Marine Fighter Squadron (VMF) 212. On the 23d, she conducted carrier qualifications for the squadron. On the 24th, she loaded ammunition and supplies at Sasebo and on the 25th, she got underway for operating area "Nan" in the Yellow Sea. There she relieved carrier HMS GLORY (R 62) assuming CTE 95.11, and on the 26th, launched her first close air support sortie.

During the next months, she cruised off the west coast of Korea, alternating with carrier HMAS SYDNEY (R 17) as CTE 95.11. VMF-212 recorded 1,743 sorties in support of ROK, U.S. Marine, and EUSAK ground forces; enforcing the U.N. blockade; rendering SAR assistance, and flying armed and photo reconnaissance missions. On 17 November, the ship and the squadron established a new sortie record for CVEs--64. RENDOVA completed her last support operation 6 December.

USS RENDOVA earned two battle stars for Korean war service.
