Comments: I am a niece of John Phipps Miller SH2 who was from Hartley, IA and served in the Navy on the U.S.S. Essex and served at Ft. Bremerton. He received an honorary discharge for disability on April 30, 1952. He was on the ship on April 24, 1951 by a letter my parents received (S-3 Div., San Francisco on his return address). They were at San Diego for another week at the time of his letter, then returning to Bremerton. He worked in the Laundry, delivering laundry to the Officers (130 officers and 90 chiefs). He also served in the Navy during WWII. If anyone remembers him or could give me more information about what the USS Essex was involved in during the Korean conflict and your experiences, I would appreciate hearing from you, or if you served on the USS Essex around 1950-'52. He was killed in a car accident in Dec. '52, so we don't have too much information about him. I would really appreciate hearing any stories about the USS Essex or my uncle if someone remembers him. He was a very tall, handsome guy, 6 foot, and was never married.
He mentioned seeing a Kirlin on the ship every day in his letters, which may have been someone his family knew from Iowa. Or would like copies of any photos of the ship or on the ship.
Thanks so much if you can reply. It was wonderful to find his letter about his duty on the ship, Darcy Schultz in Iowa

Comments: I left my first (Regular Navy ship), USS Badoeng Strait CVE-116 in Sasebo Japan (upon our return from the west coast of Korea) in Jan 52. My taxi to the Essex (operating off the east coast of Korea) was a Fleet Oiler. As I rode the high line chair and landed on the hangar deck of the Essex the OOD passed the word that I was to shave my beard before I had my first meal (the Badoeng Strait allowed beards after we left the States--the Essex only allowed mustaches),
My nine months on the CVE was spent in the Gunnery department with me submitting monthly requests for transfer to Radar (even wore a Radar strikers badge above my SN stripes). While waiting on the hangar deck I was surprised when the Personnel man asked me if I wanted in Operation. I finally made it to CIC and when I left the Essex in Bremerton dry dock in Sep 1953 I had made RD3.
