Been battling cancer throughout my body for years, and wonder how many more were affected by the radiation. Was part of the crews that went on the islands after the bombs we exploded to retrive data boxes and such. Would like to hear from others that were there. Also heard there was a class action suit, anyone have info on this ?

Comments: My father, William M. Durden, passed away this past June. In his belongings, I found a photo of The Bairoko. My Mother tells me this is the ship my father served on during his time in Korea. I am trying to verify this, as I had always thought he had served on another ship. Does anyone know where I might be able to look up names of crew members during this time? Or better yet, is there anyone that served on The Bairoko with my father? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Comments: I am looking for anyone who would have served with my father, Robert B. Overfield. He served aboard the USS BAIROKO from 8 Sep 1950 to 11 Aug 1952. His rank was ETC. I would very much appreciate having the chance to talk with anyone who knew my father. This is especially important to me as the first anniversary of his passing will be 31 Aug. He died from complications of Parkinson's Disease. I would very much like to get information I could put in my family history and so others in the family will get a chance to know him. Thanks so very much for any help you could give me!

My father knew him in the Navy and I recieved a picture of him and my dad the other day. I know it has been so many years and it is a shot in the dark that I would fine him still alive but if anyone knows of any info on him it would be appreciated.

“...she had five men killed and 13 injured by an explosion and flash fire...”

When the Korean conflict broke out Bairoko was immediately readied for active duty. She was recommissioned 12 September 1950 and reported to the Pacific Fleet. Between November 1950 and August 1953 she made three extended cruises to the Far East (14 November 1950-15 August 1951, 1 December 1951-9 June 1952 and February-August 1953), acting in support of the United Nations Forces in Korea.

Her planes flew hundreds of strikes against North Korean and "Chinese Volunteer" troops, installations, transportation facilities, and naval units. On 9 May 1951 she had five men killed and 13 injured by an explosion and flash fire in Japanese waters.

USS Bairoko received three battle stars for her Korean service.
