I could provide a photo if you think you might possibly have known him.Although his race was considered "Negro" he was of mixed heritage and looked more Mediteranian or Hispanic with olive complexion and black, wavy hair. Comments: Reported aboard the Bing Ding in Apr 51 (fresh from Boot Camp--San Diego) at North Island. Was assigned to F-Div (Gunnery). I immediately started submitting monthly requests for transfer to Operations as a Radarman (was a Radar operator in Reserve before going Regular Navy). By Jan 52 I was still in Gunnery (wearing a Radar striker patch above my SN stripes. While in Liberty line (Sasebo Japan) my Chief came looking for Volunteers for a draft to the ESSEX CV-9. I jumped at the chance and rode an Oiler out to the Essex. While waiting on the hangar deck for whatever assignment I was surprised when the Personnelman asked me if I wanted into Operations. I finally got my Radar assignment and made RD3 before I left the Essex in Bremerton in Sep 53 when I was transferred to the USS Suisun AVP-53. I made one cruise on her from Sep 53 to Mar 54 (San Diego to Iwakuni Japan and return to San Diego) at which time I was taking an early out and the Suisun was on a quick turn around for Japan so I was transferred back aboard the BING DING for my last four month in the Navy--this time I was in CIC and Radar. Round-about way of getting what I originally wanted. Still, it was a great experience. (On the Bing Ding we were able to grow BEARDS after we left the States--however, the Essex only allowed mustaches so when the OOD saw me swing aboard the hangar deck from the Oiler, the order was passed that I had to shave before eating that day.)

“...invaluable close ground support ....during the defense of the Pusan Perimeter...”
From July 1950 until February 1953 Badoeng Strait completed three tours off Korea (29 July 1950-23 January 1951, 2 October 1951-14 February 1952, and 6 October 1952-11 February 1953), as a unit of TF's 95 and 77.
During these tours she operated on anti-submarine warfare duty and as a part of the blockade-escort force. Her aircraft provided invaluable close ground support during the early period of the action, particularly during the defense of the Pusan Perimeter (6 August-12 September 1950), Inchon landing (15 September), and Hungnam evacuation (9-24 December 1950).
Badoeng Strait received the Navy Unit Commendation and six battle stars for her services during the Korean action.
