Comments: Would like to say hello to all former members of the 728th Military Bn, both A and B Companies. I was assigned to A Company in YongDongPo in late 1954 and B Company in early 1955. I arrived here(landed at Inchon-Seoul IAP) Wednesday night. I am staying here at the Dragon Hill Lodge at Yongsan Army Post (old Seoul Military Post, home of B Company, 728th MP Bn and 8th Army Hdq in early 1955. It is absolutely unbelievable how much the country has changed since the 1950s. I visited the old A Company area in YongDongPo yesterday. I still remembered how to get there. I crossed the Han River Bridge where A company had bridge duty. The city of Seould extends from Inchon to well south of the old Seoul. There are now about 25 freeway bridges and 4 train bridges crossing the Han River. There now about 15 million people in Seoul-YomgDongPo area now. Bulidings and apartments everywhere. I retired Air Force and am able to stay on post in the Armed forces hotel.

Comments: Basic at Camp Chaffee Ark, Dec '50, infantry basic and artillary training 105 Howitzers. Arrived Inchon Apr '51. Train to Taegu, assigned 728th MP, Co. D. Few months guard duty and MSR guard, then reassigned as company clerk, because regular clerk got appendicitis on R and R and didn't return.

One night after coming off guard duty some GI had not unloaded his M-1. The Sgt. checked it and it went off, killing a guy sleeping in the next room.

Also, remember two GIs got drunk, took a jeep, turned it over in a rice paddy, were pinned under it and drowned. MPs from Co. D had to bring them in. The gasoline had burned their faces pretty bad.

Eventually I was sent to Hqs Co in Chuncheon as Co. D, clerk. Home on emergency leave in Nov '51. Back to Hqs Co in Jan '52. Reassigned to Japan as sole surviving son in Sep '52; Fuchu Ordinance Depot. Released in Nov '52.

I remember a Matekovik at Co. D, and Matarocci, Smitty and Sconyers at Hqs Co. Still owe Smitty ten bucks.

Comments: I have been, for years, trying to locate anyone from this unit, and have located a few that still exist. To mention a few, sgt Aubrey Smith, Corp., Gene dorphy andSgt Joe White, am sure there are more around, and Iwould like to know any and all that remain and if possible, communicate with them. Particularly, I need to know if any still exist, who may have been witness to, the incident, when the jeep I was working on fell on my chest. To refreshen your memory,It happened in september of 1953. I am trying to get compensation for a back problem as a result of it, but wouldn't you know. Records were destroyed in a fire back in 1973. If you know anything about it, please contact me. And evenif you don't, maybe we can share some memories I have some pix, I would be willing to share!! Arena and Newcomb were from some where in Boston and Dwyer was from Cambridge MA. Other then that I don't know. Do you recall Puzio, Smity, Joins and I think it was Alverez. I was in A Comp. till being transferred to C Company. Jesus were you in A company when during a "Quick Draw" someone was shot in the barracks? I had just got to Korea around 11 or 12/70. PEACE

Comments: The following obituary was published in today's (10/09/03) edition of the Albany (NY) Times Union.

John W. Baranski

COHOES John W. Baranski lost his long battle with his health and died peacefully at the VA Hospital in Albany with his wife, Joyce, lovingly at his bedside on October 7, 2003. He was 65 on September 7, 2003 and enjoyed a wonderful day with his family and friends. John was a proud veteran of the Korean War, serving with the 728th MP battalion in Korea. He may be best known for bringing the Philly Cheese steak to the area, when he and his wife owned and operated a deli and later a bar and restaurant in Cohoes, retiring in 1988 due to some health issues. John was born in Yonkers, N.Y. and was the son of Mary J. Burke of Cohoes and the late John W. Baranski. John remained active and supportive to the community of Cohoes, always lending a hand to support what he believed was right. His trips to the National Shrine of the Divine Mercy in Stockbridge, Mass., sharing The Chaplet daily at 3 p.m. gave comfort to John. His relationship with the staff at the VA Hospital was special and his respect for people and the respect he had in return was wonderful. Before his debilitating illnesses starting in February, you could often find John driving around Cohoes, stopping to pass the time of day, sitting with a cup of coffee at Stewart's and lots of conversation. John was a member of Knights of Columbus Cohoes Council 192 for 35 years and also a Fourth Degree Knight. He also belonged to the Cohoes American Legion, VFW Post 1019, and the AMVETS. He was a communicant of St. Bernard's Church and also a member of the Military Police Regimental Association. Besides his wife of 45 years, Joyce, he was the proud father and father-in-law of Jackie Frederick and her husband Tom (Top as John called him), Judy Kubik and her husband Paul, John W. Baranski III and his wife Michele. He was the best Pop to his grandsons, Tommy Abel, Josh Abel, Matt Abel, Paul Kubik, Jason Kubik; and Poppa to his one and only granddaughter, Sarah Baranski. He is also survived by his two sisters, Marilyn Suthers and Diane Alvarez and her husband, Michael and nieces, Tiffany and Mariel from Ariz. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday morning at 9:30 from St. Bernard's Church, Ontario Street, Cohoes. Interment in St. Agnes Cemetery, Cohoes. Viewing will be from 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday, October 10 at the Stanton-Farrell Funeral Home at 326 Columbia Street, Cohoes, N.Y. The Chaplet will be prayed for John at 3 p.m. on Friday. Members of the Cohoes Knights of Columbus are requested to meet at the funeral home on Friday evening at 7:00. Donations to the Chapel at the V.A. Hospital, Holland Ave., Albany, NY, in memory of John, would be appreciated.

I remember guarding the Hon river Bridge and working with a very tall black guy. We used to go out for a beer together. I remember guarding the Shoe Fly bridge and the Hemorrhagic fever ward at a field hospital. Our barracks was an old Stars and Stripes headquarters and we slept upstairs. Our Company Commander was a grocery store owner in civilian life. Somewhere, I have a picture of me and our houseboy, I think his name was Lee.

Comments: I am looking for anyone who served with these two units, especially Co. C in Yongsan. I served in Korea from 1970-1971 and would be interested in a reunion from these units and times. There is a Charlie Company website but the problem seems to be that many people are in different sites, and there should be a way to inform them of what these sites are.
