The 68th AAA Gun Battalion has just concluded its 16th annual reunion which was held in Bloomington, Minnesota 18-21 September. Les Long, formerly of D Battery and his wife Elaine were our hosts and did a wonderful job of putting things together. We have an active group who attend these reunions and if you are not attending, you're missing out on some good times.
Next year, in October, 2004, we will gather in Midland, Texas. Exact dates are yet to be determined. And thinking ahead, we will all get together in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 2005. Plan on making one or both of these reunions.
Cliff Schiesinger (formerly a Headquarters Battery member) lives in Midland and will be our host in 2004. With much help from him, I maintain the mailing roster of all ex-68th fellows whose addresses we know. Currently, there are over 650 names on the roster which includes mailing address, telephone number where known, and the battery they served in. If we know their email address, we have that also. And finally, we keep a roster of the deceased.
If you want to be added to the mailing list (or find out if you're already on it) send me the following information:
Your full name, to include middle initial Your wife's name (if you wish) Mailing address (include email if you have one) Battery you served with (508th SRMU members are welcome) Telephone number
Finally, if you are looking for a particular buddy, email me if you have a computer and I will get back to you. If you don't have a computer, send me a self-addressed and stamped envelope and I'll get back in touch with you. My email and postal addresses:

Seeing as how this is the 68th AAA, I'm thinking there must be a connection and the unit was reorganized at some point in time after Korea. (My dad served in the 300th FA in Korea). At any rate, I'm interested in the connection. My unit was a Sergeant Missile batallion. Thanks for any help. Rick

He also remembers the accidental electrocution death of Sergeant Rene LeClaire. Sgt. LeClaire was with communications. He had climbed a phone pole to hook onto a communication line. Sgt LeClaire accidentally touched a power line and was killed as a result. He also recalls seeing a young private severely wounded when a shell landed close to him. The young G I had most of his buttocks blown away by the explosion. He doesn`t remember a name or what happened to the soldier after that. My dad was very fortunate because he came close to being hit by a shell himself. The impact and explosion blew him into a hole and several men were blown in on top of him. He also remembers THE BOWLING ALLEY and many other details as well. I hope Captain Turek, Stephenson, and Trigg are still living and will see this message and contact me.

Comments: War stories that don`t involve combat are some of the best stories of all. My dad was telling me about leaving Fort Lewis and getting caught up in a typhoon, with no power in the ship. They were tossed around like a cat playing with a ping-pong ball. Several men ended up with broken bones and they had to eat when they could eat standing up. The tables weren`t made for sitting. He was also telling me about a railway junction town called: Yung-Dung-PO . The guys came upon this place and there was a brewery or storage facility, of some sort, in this town. From what I gathered, the place was deserted and being hard fighting soldiers, as they were, they decided to dump their 5 gallon water container and replace the water with some local brew. This is classified material if you`re an MP, and don`t forget these guys had a war to fight. They also happened on some PX supplies, notably Candy Bars. Now every soldier deserves a little sweetness in the midst of misery and the fellows helped themselves to a few bars of candy. After all, they didn`t want that candy to fall into enemy hands, and especialy not he beer. Those are true American fighting men and I think they should get a medal.
