Keywords: Edwin L. McCrea proudly served in the 865 AA unit in the Korean war and later served in the Vietnam war. He has attended several reunions of the 865 unit and greatly appreciates the friendship of those he served with. If anybody has any stories or situational details concerning Ed McCrea's time in Korea they would be much appreciated. I am putting together a biography for him so he can be included in a small museum in Lampasas, TX for veterans from the Lampasas area. I know he served in Korea with Ted Baca, Tine Martin and many others, but I don't know how he was associated with these individuals.

Comments: Daddy was deployed to Korea on 08/14/1950 from Camden,
SC.where he was in the National Guard. His nickname
from his dad was Pete or Cooter and dad was from
McBee, SC.. He may have been remembered from carrying
a small Korean boy on his back quite frequently and
daddy says that he adopted him but that is about far
as he was willing to discuss it and he would speak
very little bout his war experience . He did earn
several medals and he was quite a character throughout
his life . Dad passed away on 11/06/2011 at 81 . If
anyone has anything to share please let me know for it
would be so very valuable to me .

My father was Corporal Stanley Kowalik. He has passed
and while I was growing up I remember him saying he was
part of the 865 attached to the 8th Regular Army. He
was in from 1947 first occupying Japan and then being
sent to Korea. He told me about Porkchop Hill and
getting his feet frozen (which he had problems with all
his life). His records were destroyed in the KC fire
and all I have is his DD-214. I was wondering if
anyone knew him or could give me any insight into
battles, places, etc. He did say that they were
dropped into Korea with little supplies or instruction
on what to do.

Any help would be appreciated!

Comments: Maybe some of you "old timers" from the days of the 865 in Korea might be curious what happened to your old unit. I reported to the 865th in Playa del Ray, California in October 1957 fresh out of missile operation and maintenance school at Fort Bliss, Texas. My assignment was to be the Platoon Leader of the Fire Control Platoon. We had three radars at the fire control site and the capability of launching NIKE surface to air missiles from four launch platforms. We did very well in all our inspections, this unit being one of the best in the surface to air operations in the Army. But then we were told we were going to turn over the unit to the California National Guard, and in 1958 began training soldier/civilians of the Army National Guard to take over our site. We did that successfully and the 865th became a unit of the California National Guard, deactivated from the rolls of the U.S. Army. The people in the unit were tranferred from the site at Plaza del Ray all over the LA defense area. THe 865th died gloriously! We had a great unit at its death! You old guys started it right!

The article mentions he was assigned with the 865th AAA and was being stationed to FT. Bragg with the 82nd Airborne Div. All i know was that he was assigned with the 865th approx. 1952-54. I have no idea what CO. he was with or anything. His name was SGT. John F. Kerrigan, from Chester, Pa. He passed away in 1993. One of the Veterans on our next "Veterans to DC" trip, which is scheduled for May 20-22, 2011 is CPL Leonard Wuebker from Minster, Ohio. Our group of volunteers takes WWII and Korean War Veterans who have not yet been to Washington to see their Memorial. CPL Wuebker listed this as the unit with which he served during that time period.

If any of you know of him and would like to drop him a line, we will get it to him during this trip. If you are familiar with Honor Flight, we are the same thing except we take the Vets by chartered bus (3 days) from Shelby county, Ohio. I will gather any/all notes to him from this site and make sure he gets them during "Mail Call."
