January 1952 to May 1953. When Dad shipped out of San Francisco CA, the name of the
troop ship was the USS General W. M. Black (AP-135) Any information would be greatly
appreciated. We still have Dad's photo album. Many of the photos have name
identifying the individuals. Examples were two Ammo Handlers named Anderson, Jones,

Comments: Hello All,
I am researching the service of my Grandfather, SSGT Dick J. Wassenaar. I have photographs of him in Ft. Bliss and Korea that I’m happy to share with anyone. I’m hoping to confirm his unit/battery, identify other soldiers in his pictures, and hopefully learn more about him and his unit from other veterans and families.
I have pictures of him in a shirt with the “We Sweep The Skies” logo, and next to vehicles marked with 78AAA B-23, so I’m assuming he was assigned to B Battery. He was a member of an M55 crew and have multiple photos of him tending to his quad-50 Cal.
I’d love to learn any information y’all may have. I’m a Marine veteran of Afghanistan and my grandfather and I only began to share our common experiences before he passed.
Thank you all for your service.

Comments: Hi,
My father passed away several years ago but I'm digging through his records and seeing if anyone remains from his unit for a project I'm researching. He was Robert Ray "Bobby" Smith, from Durham, NC. He was there in 1950-1952 with the 78th AAA Battery B in Inchon as far as I can tell and notes on photos I have found of him. Not sure if anyone is left from that period, but I would be very keen in talking to any that remain to see if he knew you, or you remembered him, etc. Thank you.

Comments: My father was Col Thomas W Ackert and was in command of the 78th AAA Gun Bn in Korea, at least for much of the time. Dad was at the Battle of Taegu and at Unsan. I have some pictures of that time and am piecing together more information, but I sure wish that I had been wise enough to talk to Dad about all this before he passed. I do have a letter from Louis Wedge, who was in Battery D under Dad's command and I have the Anti-Aircraft Journals to include at least one story written by Dad. What I don't have is how Dad was hurt while in Korea (records lost in fire). My understanding is that he was injured by an explosion while traveling in his jeep, but that he refused to leave his men. He was sent to a hospital ship and, I have been told, received a Purple Heart. He stayed in Korea in support of his troops, although I have found a couple of reassignments (8th Army special staff in Oct 1951) and a TDY to EUSAK in December 1951. If anyone knows the story, I would be so honored to learn it.

I do not have a copy of his DD214 and am looking for help in finding what medals or ribbons this unit was awarded. Have copies of his letters he sent home so have somewhat of a timeline for his service. Service dates- Sept 11, 1952 to Aug 21, 1954. First letter dated Sept. 24, 1952 came from Chaplain in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Second letter Oct. 1, 1952 came from Fort Bliss, Texas. 16 weeks of training. First 8 weeks were survival training next 8 training on guns. First letter from Dad, Feb. 10, 1953 was to parents asking to pick him up at bus depot for leave. Second letter came from Korea (addressed from San Francisco) June 4, 1953, says he was a gunner on 50 caliber machine gun. Second letter June 9, 1953 says he was in Korea about 30 miles from Seoul. Says Seoul was bombed again last night and the skies were lit up. June 28, 1953 In Korea, made PFC. Aug 21, 1953 went to Seoul last week. Oct 7, 1953 Squad leader went to Japan and I took his place. April 8, 1954 I only have 2 1/2 months left in Korea. From Fort Bliss to ship out I don't have actual date or where actual ship departed I don't know for sure. Would like to know the name of the ship and what medals or ribbons were given I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Cathy Duvall
