Comments: My father was Col Thomas W Ackert and was in command of the 78th AAA Gun Bn in Korea, at least for much of the time. Dad was at the Battle of Taegu and at Unsan. I have some pictures of that time and am piecing together more information, but I sure wish that I had been wise enough to talk to Dad about all this before he passed. I do have a letter from Louis Wedge, who was in Battery D under Dad's command and I have the Anti-Aircraft Journals to include at least one story written by Dad. What I don't have is how Dad was hurt while in Korea (records lost in fire). My understanding is that he was injured by an explosion while traveling in his jeep, but that he refused to leave his men. He was sent to a hospital ship and, I have been told, received a Purple Heart. He stayed in Korea in support of his troops, although I have found a couple of reassignments (8th Army special staff in Oct 1951) and a TDY to EUSAK in December 1951. If anyone knows the story, I would be so honored to learn it.

Comments: I am trying to find other Veterans that served in this unit. My Dad, James Oliver Millsap, passed away Dec. 16, 2014 at the Veterans Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas. I do not have a copy of his DD214 and am looking for help in finding what medals or ribbons this unit was awarded. Have copies of his letters he sent home so have somewhat of a timeline for his service. Service dates- Sept 11, 1952 to Aug 21, 1954. First letter dated Sept. 24, 1952 came from Chaplain in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Second letter Oct. 1, 1952 came from Fort Bliss, Texas. 16 weeks of training. First 8 weeks were survival training next 8 training on guns. First letter from Dad, Feb. 10, 1953 was to parents asking to pick him up at bus depot for leave. Second letter came from Korea (addressed from San Francisco) June 4, 1953, says he was a gunner on 50 caliber machine gun. Second letter June 9, 1953 says he was in Korea about 30 miles from Seoul. Says Seoul was bombed again last night and the skies were lit up. June 28, 1953 In Korea, made PFC. Aug 21, 1953 went to Seoul last week. Oct 7, 1953 Squad leader went to Japan and I took his place. April 8, 1954 I only have 2 1/2 months left in Korea. From Fort Bliss to ship out I don't have actual date or where actual ship departed I don't know for sure. Would like to know the name of the ship and what medals or ribbons were given I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Cathy Duvall

protecting the Inchon Bay, my first duty was that as a
generator operator, after that I was sent to an island
in North Korea named Chodo as a forward observer for
six months, following that assignment I rejoined the
unit in Inchon and was attached to the communication
section, shortly thereafter the unit was moved to Pusan
to protect the airbase there, once in Pusan the unit
was bothered with small aircrafts that everyone called
bedcheck charlie almost on a nightly basis, during
that period someone came up with the idea that the 90MM
guns could by used up on the 38th as field artillery
weapons, if my memory is correct two our weapons was
sent forward on that mission, I do not remember how
many of our units people were wounded, but some were at

My Dad served in Korea from Jan. 52 to May 53. Dad was with Battery A. He recently told me a story about the time they moved his gun up toward the front lines to shell NK bunkers across the Han river. His gun and gun crew, a 50 cal. crew and a mess crew. For about 2 weeks. Talked about a NK gun that started lobbing shells toward their position. After a shell hit about 200 yards away, the next two shells hit at the same point. Lucky for everyone that the NK gun was at max range. First time I heard this story. Hope someone from Dad's unit reads this and contacts me. He is interested in contacting his Comrades from his time in Korea.

Comments: My Father Robert (Bob) A Sapp of Hammond, Indiana served with the 78th AAA Battalion from Jan 52 to May 53. Served on Battery "A". My Dad is getting together more information concerning his time in Korea. He came ashore at Inchon and was stationed near an Air Force Base near the Han River. At first I thought the AFB was Kimpo, but some of my research would indicate his unit was near Suwon AFB. If anyone served with my Dad, he and I would like to hear from you.
Thank You.

Comments: Was Chaplain's Assistant 78th AAA Gun...Inchon Korea, July 1951 for several months, then moved to Suwon (30 miles or so south of Yong Dong Po. Chaplain and I travelled and held services and did counseling on occasions way up north. (I have had 3 light strokes, and have forgotten a lot of details...not to mention I will be a young 75 yrs old, was born in E.St. Louis, Illinois 12-25-28) Served with Chaplain Leighton Harrell, and another was Chaplain Adams. I play the piano and remember while still in Inchon playing for the officers to dance with The nurses who came to our camp while still in Inchon. They were off a hospital ship like the "Hope" or another one. Not sure of name of the ship. Colonel Grandon was our commander while in Inchon before moving to Suwon. My closest friend while at the camp in Inchon was Dotson (cannot recall his first name) Mollee was one of the Korean girls who worked in the dining hall. If anyone can recall the two fellows from Olney, Illinois...sure would appreciate hearing about them.

Comments: Lt Dave Hoghes was a SigC officer with an AAA Bn in Korea. He was badly wounded.

He related to me some of the efforts of the AAA Bn in support ofthe ROK and how they re-wote the 90mm"Gun Book" out to 19500 yards, about a shoot where they demolished a building full of ememy generals. Said that the AAA Bn could put 300 rounds in the air beforew the first one hit the ground.

Any info on him would be most appr. DonH

Comments: I have a copy of the final edition of the CANNONEER from the 78th AAA Gun Bn.printed on 15 May 1955. It has pictures and a history from organization in August 1940 as an AAA Coast Artillery Regiment to deactivation in Korea in 1955.
It also has a list of the former cammanders from 1949 to 1955.
I would donate it to the reunion committee on request.
