THIS WAS (OR ONCE HAD BEEN) THE 2ND BATTALION OF THE 2ND INFANTRY DIVISION. I STILL DON'T KNOW HOW MANY MEN IN THE BAT. WERE KILLED, OR HOW MANY WERE WOUNDED, OR HOW MANY MADE IT TO SAFETY. I HAVE LOOKED IN HISTORIES OF THE KOREAN WAR...INCLUDING THE UNIT HISTORY OF THE 2ND INFANTRY DIVISION...BUT HAVE FOUND NO MENTION OF THIS DISASTER THAT BEFELL THIS BATTALION.ANY INFORMATION GREATLY APPRECIATED. wdovebird@hotmail.com

His remains were never recovered. If anyone has any information about him please contact the family. Needless to say my grandmother therefore never accepted his confirmed death as accurate. Any information would be helpful.

I was wounded on 21 March in a night firefight with Chinese by the Samichon River in the Netherlands Sector. The Dutch swept the area and brought us back to the MLR. Comments: I was the platoon leader of the 81 platoon, D/l/38 during the early spring, summer and early fall of 1952.
The members of the platoon did such an outstanding job that the Bn CO offerred me command of a rifle company and I was the junior first Lt in the Bn.
The guys seemed to be able to work all day and shoot missions all night. i believe that nearly every member of the platoon deserved the Silver Star for their preparation for and participatiion in the defense of Pork Chop Hill on the night of September 18, 1952. Anyone knowing the whereabouts of any of these guys, please contact me. One of the members was able to contact me a few years ago and I was able to get his records updated with a bronze star with v device and a purple heart. i am hoping to get his bronze star with v device upgraded to a Silver Star.
The guys seemed to just believe they were doing their job. However, without their continuous fire suport we would more than likely lost Pork Chop and the Chinese could entered the mouth of a valley with very little between them and Seoul.
Thanks, Bob rogers

A group of soldiers from his unit were killed only days before the war ended. You might remember my dad as the person who built a large Santa Claus figure for the company out of papermache and wire. He is in ill health right now and it would be great if he could get in touch with some survivors of the war. It is only recently that he has even shared any details of his experiences in Korea. Loosing those fellow soldiers was a pain he carried silently for many years. The phone number given is mine, I would be happy to talk to any who knew him and pass along your information to him. Comments: Today is Memorial Day, 29-May-2006, and I'm preparing to visit the "National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific" to pay respects to my uncle, Roy Willis Matthews, and to the many others who served our great country. PFC Roy Matthews was killed in action on 25-May-1951 and while his remains were never returned to our family, his name is "etched in stone" and provides another way for us to remember him. His unit was in L Co., 3/38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. If anyone has any information regarding my uncle or historical information about the conflicts that he may have been involved with, I would appreciate hearing from you.
Thanks and God Bless America!
