Comments: I am a granddaughter of Robert Guisinger who was in the 24th Infantry Division. He had befriended Harry P. Darby in the 2nd Engineer Combat Battalion, while in Korea, and it is because of Lt. Darby that I am even sitting here writing this. While my grandpa was driving a truck filled with ammunition, Lt. Darby had insisted that he travel across a bridge with my grandpa while standing on the running board. Once they cleared the bridge, a mortar hit about 8 feet from them and Lt. Darby took the brunt of the shrapnel. Because he was on the running board, his position ended up shielding my grandpa who only took a piece of shrapnel to the knee. It is incredibly humbling to know that Lt. Darby's sacrifice allowed my grandpa to establish and leave an amazing legacy. Sadly, in my research it appears that Harry Darby was the last of his family, and so I can't reach out to any family to share what his sacrifice meant. There is very little that I can find about him, but my grandpa's 5 children, his 9 grandchildren, and his 17 great grandchildren would like to carry on Lt. Darby's memory. It is a small chance, but if there is anyone who could tell us more about Lt. Darby, or if anyone has a picture, our family would be appreciative to see the man that saved my grandpa.

Comments: I served in A Co from 90-91 and learned the company history before going to the promotion board and PLDC at Camp Jackson. My wife's grandfather served in A Co during the Korean War and witnessed the colors being burned after the unit was overrun. His name is Giles Breaux. He was a brand new SGT when he witnessed the colors being burned and he low-crawled over the battlefield to a bulldozer to where he started it up and raised the bucket up to shield himself from enemy fire. He proceeded through the battlefield to find buddies who might be left alive. In 1998 I met my wife and a few weeks later I met her grandfather who told me this same story I learned about 9 yrs prior while serving in A Co. Do any Engineers out there remember him? If so, please reply with your knowledge of SGT Breaux, I am trying to put a history of his service together for his family. He passed in April of 1999, and I told this same story at his graveside of knowing about him 9 years before I met his granddaughter.

My Congress Women requested copies of the Daily reports for the Battalion and Line Companies for the period of 1970 -1971. The Department of the Army did not provide the requested information. Instead they provided and bureaucratic letter saying nothing.
I do not see how they can deny anyone that can provide copies of their Hostile Fire Pay Orders. The only way one received hostile fire pay was to cross the Imjin River into the areas that agent orange was used. If you do not have copies of your Hostile Fire Pay orders request a copy of your military records including pay records. They will show Hostile Fire Pay if your received it.
All of those that were in the 2nd Engineer Battalion 1970 - 1971 need to ban together in an effort to demonstrate that we are the engineers that the VA manual says they must consider impacted by AO. Note I have found all kinds of 2nd Engineer documentation for the 1968 - 1969 period.

I awoke this morning to this message in my inbox. 1Lt.
Charles Chuck Henson served in the 2nd Engineer Battalion, 2nd
Infantry Division during 1968-69 in Korea. I was appointed in
January, 1969 to take his place as Battalion Maintenance Officer
when Chuck rotated back to the States. It wasn't until 41 years
later that I reconnected with Chuck and learned that we lived
only a few blocks from each other.
Chuck, like many of us from the 2nd Engineers and others who
served during the 2nd Korean War, suffered from the effects of
Agent Orange Poisoning. Since 2006, Chuck battled with Chronic
Lymphocytic Leukemia (also called CLL), an incurable cancer.
When he contacted me in 2010, he had no idea that he was exposed
to Agent Orange in Korea. I worked with him to gather the
evidence of his exposure and got him connected with the Georgia
Veterans Service Officer serving our county to get his claim
started. After battling with the VA for nearly 3 years, he was
finally granted Service Connection at 100% P and T just over 2
months ago.
Agent Orange has taken another good man and Brother. Through
the entire time Chuck was fighting with his illnesses, he did
all he could to help and encourage other Vets from Korea,
especially 2nd Engineers. When we learned of one of our own men
who was in his final days in hospice and had only a distant
cousin as family, Chuck stepped up and provided a substantial
financial gift to help fund my trip to Montana to be with this
Soldier is his last days. That is the man Chuck Henson was.
In Korea, Chuck served with dignity and great pride. He was a
tough, demanding but fair leader and had the respect of his
superiors as well as his subordinates. If his men were working
late to keep our equipment running, Lt. Henson and his assistant
WO Jack Proctor were there with them. He was truly an officer
and a gentleman.
I will be attending his Memorial Service at his property a few
mile from here where he hosted annual caving events.
Understandably this is a very difficult time for his Wife Patty
and for his daughters, so I have not included his email address
here. If, however, any of you who receive this wish to share a
message to his family you are welcome to send them to and I will print and deliver them next
Saturday.
Please take a moment to send up a prayer for Chuck's family for
strength over their loss.
Thank you.

Gentlemen:
This is Patty Springer, Chuck's wife. I found your email
addresses on his computer this morning while searching to find
those good souls who helped him win his disability fight with
the VA. Yours are the two names I could find.
I am so sad to tell you he passed away Friday, April 26th at
12:15 p.m. Although we cannot know for certain, it seems most
likely that overwhelming infection brought about from his
leukemia and recent treatments is the cause.
I thank you -- sincerely and with much humility -- for the
assistance and guidance you provided to him in obtaining his VA
benefits. He had recently received the phone call and letter
that he had been approved for 100% disability. He felt
vindicated.
I feel lost. He's my everything.
Chuck desired to be cremated and not have a traditional funeral.
Instead there will be a memorial and celebration this coming
Saturday, May 4th starting at noon on our property on Lookout
Mountain off Hwy 157 at Old State Rd. I plan to contact the VA
office in Lafayette tomorrow to arrange for honor guard if
possible.
Please come to celebrate Chuck if you can. I would like to meet
you, shake your hand(s), and personally thank you for your help.
Sincerely, thank you.

Comments: Thanks to this website I provided a DNA sample back in
2002. Well I am happy to report that we got word from
the Army this past Sunday 6/11/11, that my Uncle, John
Graham Lavelle's remains have been positively identified.
John (Shawn)will shortly be receiving a burial with full
Military Honors on American soil, 60 years after he was
lost. We are beyond thrilled that Shawn will be coming
home at last. Many, many thanks to this website for
this! Shawn's sisters, my Mom and Aunt, now 83 and 80
respectively can now have some closure.
