Comments: I am the grandson of Korean War veteran David Stuart Hungerford, 72nd Combat Engineers. He later served with the 1st Cavalry regiment and then later on in Vietnam was a senior NCO in the Signal Corps. He passed away when I was young (2003) so I never got to know him, leading me to the curiosity about his service. The stories I do know are from my father and foo newspaper articles but would like to learn more about his time in Korea. Regular searches have yielded very little and I am unable to find much information about his service. I was wondering if there was a way I could contact other members of the 72nd Combat Engineers that are still alive, perhaps hoping to find anyone that might have served with him.
The Korean War is unfamiliar to me, as my area of expertise is the Pacific War of World War II but any information would help.

Comments: I am seeking information concerning a US Army combat engineer unit that was attached to the 27th British Commonwealth Brigade during the Korean War. I am in discussions with an individual in Australia concerning the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment’s participation in the Battle of Yongyu/Yongju. On the battle’s Wikipedia page Background section, there is a citation from the book The British Part in the Korean War: A Distant Obligation. Volume I by Anthony Farrar-Hockley (1990) that states in effect that under the command of the brigade were a number of US Army units, including 155 mm howitzers from the US 90th Field Artillery Battalion, M4 Sherman tanks from the US 89th Tank Battalion, and a company from the US 72nd Combat Engineer Battalion. My argument is that the actual unit was the US 72nd Engineer Combat Company. According to our discussions, unless there is a suitable reliable, published source to counter Farrar-Hockley’s designation, he doesn’t believe there should be a change in the 72nd Engineers unit designation. A Google Search hasn’t uncovered anything so far that meets this threshold. Unfortunately, my https://history.army.mil/html/forcestruc/lineages/branches/eng/0072enco.htm link does not satisfy him. He says that while it does prove that there was a 72nd Engineer Combat Company that served in Korea during the UN Offensive into North Korea, it does not specifically link it to the Yongyu/Yongju fighting during 22 October 1950. According to Wikipedia, using the US Army Center for Military History as a reference would be using material from a source to imply a conclusion not explicitly stated by any source. Short of something definitive, he thinks the 72nd Engineers should remain a battalion-level rather than a company-level formation, as per Farrar-Hockley's designation. Can you refer me to a book reference and page number that specifically addresses the 72nd Engineers unit designation during the Korean War? FYI, I believe that Roy E. Appleman also got the 72nd Engineers unit designation wrong on page 284 of his description of Task Force Kean’s Bloody Gulch debacle when he stated “North Koreans also ambushed a platoon of the 72d Engineer Combat Battalion trying to help open the road.” in South to the Naktong, North to the Yalu: United States Army in the Korean War: June – November 1950. Any help would be appreciated.

was KIA in Sept. of 1950. If any family member is interested in additional
information about the circumstances of his death, they may contact me. Joseph and I
were members of the same squad and were together at the time he was wounded.

Comments: My grandfather Cpl Willie (Roscoe) Hunt was in the 72nd Combat Engineer Company of the 5th RCT. He was Killed in Action 8-15-1950. This website helped me connect with several of the men who served with him and I had the opportunity to interview them and collect their stories, which helped my family to heal from the grief. I am updating my contact information in case anyone else is related to someone who served in his unit at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii until the time of his death shortly after they were deployed to Korea for combat.

Comments: Pfc Leonard Kravitz, killed March 7th 1951. recommended
for the Medal Of Honor as the result of taking over a machine gun after the machine gunner was wounded and refusing to retreat when attacked by hordes of Chinese
troops. He stayed to cover their retreat knowing if he left they would all be sacrificed. They screamed for him to fall back but he screamed back to "get the hell out of there while they could". When found the next morning he was slumped over the machine gun. There were only six bullets left in the weapon. Dead Chinese troops all over the place and two in his embankment with him. Anyone that was present or has information please contact me. His Medal Of Honor was downgraded to the Distinguished Service Cross and I am
having him reviewed for the Medal Of Honor again.

Comments: I served with the 72nd Combat Engineers, 5th RCT,
@June '52 to about May '53. Started off at Kojee-Do Island Korea, training and building PW compounds. Then about 3 months later we moved to "the front" in several combat areas, digging ditches on the MSR (main suppy route), putting up camafloge nets on the MSR, Chopping down trees, building bunkers, and even releving an Infantry co. for a period of time so that they could enjoy a little R and R somewhere behind the lines. The only persons name I can remember serving with over there was a black person named, Fred Ralston. Would be interested in hearing from anyone who served with me during that time.

Comments: To anyone in the 72nd Engineers . . .I was contacted by telephone in March 2000 by David Zimmerman, who was in that unit also. He helped me tremendously by telling me what he knew about my grandfather, CPL Willie Roscoe Hunt and how he was killed. Because of this contact, my father Bobby Hunt, also got the chance to meet face-to-face with Vic Smart, who apparently was the a Squad Leader, and my grandfather was his assistant in the 1st Platoon. This meeting means more than you could imagine to myself, my father, and my grandmother (Cpl Hunt's widow).

I am still interested in knowing more from anyone in the 72nd Engineers, especially those in the 1st Platoon who knew him best. With the 50th anniversary of his death this week, I would be very greatful for any contact and information about the grandfather that I never got to know.

Thank you. And I salute all of you who served your country and went through hell doing your duty. I can only imagine the things that you have done and seen, and my heart goes out to you.

Comments: My grandfather was CPL Willie "Roscoe" Hunt. He was killed in action on 8-15-50. Through this database I have learned he was part of the 72nd Engineer Company (Combat). The next letters I am unfamiliar with their meaning: RGT CBT TM. Could someone tell me what that means?

I am looking for anyone who has information on my grandfather while he was alive or how and exactly where he was killed. I have also learned through this data base that Leonard Hebb, and John Tucker were also killed on 8-15-50. The family story I've heard over the years is that his unit encountered sniper fire and that my grandfather and some other soldiers were killed. Perhaps Hebb and Tucker are those soldiers.

I can't find anything on this unit in the database (or else I'm not looking in the right place). Can anyone help with more info?
