Comments: I just wanted to let you know that my father, Virgil Standing Elk passed away on June 28, 2003. I just found out his company in the Korean War, I hope I got this right: Co. A, 2 Eng, C BN.

I just would like to say when i mentioned you website a year ago, he was so excited about 'someone' such as his daughter bringing up something that he has been quiet about since his discharged, I was estatic to listen and learn about this war and have so much respect for your website.

Virgil L. Standing-Elk

RAPID CITY — Virgil L. Standing-Elk (Lakota name, Oki tan hi), 73, a Rapid City resident, died at Rapid City Regional Hospital on Saturday, June 28, 2003. He was born March 13, 1930, in White River, to Joshua and Blanche Standing-Elk, brother to 13 siblings. On January 9, 1953, he married Clara Cora Six Toes in Murdo. Of this 50-year union, he was the father to four sons and one daughter. The couple lived in White River until moving to San Jose, Calif., under the BIA Relocation Program. On July 29, 1952, he honorably served the United States on active duty in the Korean War. Virgil served with Co. A, 2nd Engr., C BN. Upon his discharge on May 28, 1954, Sergeant CE Standing-Elk was awarded the Korean Service Medal with 2 bronze service stars, United Nations Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He continued to serve for another eight years in the Reserves. He was a member of the Continental Veterans Club, Machinist Union, San Jose Indian Club (president), American Indian Council, National Heritage Foundation, Sioux Club, One Nation Generation, San Jose Youth Group, Oyate Ho, Ableza, Center for the Spirit and the Elderly Council for Indian Education. Virgil enjoyed his family, grandchildren, and adopted sons and daughter, and immersed them with traditional Lakota values. He loved powwows and founded his family drum, 4-Winds Singers, of San Jose, and Wakinyan Hoksila Singers. Virgil will forever be missed and loved. Survivors include his wife Clara Standing-Elk, Rapid City; four sons, Terrence Standing-Elk, San Jose, David Standing-Elk, San Francisco, Joe Standing-Elk, Bismarck, and Kelly Standing-Elk, San Jose; a daughter, Jennifer Standing-Elk Ledesma, San Jose; two brothers, Darrell Standing-Elk, Davis, CA, and Velmer Standing-Elk, White River; four sisters, Esther Moves Camp, Wanblee, Vivian Brave, Flandreau, and Violet Medicine Bear and Alvena Standing-Elk, both of White River; 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The wake was from 5 p.m. until 11 p.m. Wednesday at the Mother Butler Center in Rapid City. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 3, at the Mother Butler Center in Rapid City with Wilmer Mesteth and Richard Moves Camp officiating. Interment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 of Rapid City. Arrangements are under the direction of the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

late 1950 until early 1952.
He was wounded, and sent back to Japan, and from there to the States, first to Ft. Carson and

was assigned mission of fortifying outpost sugarloaf one week before end of conflict (probably June 1953). Our squad leader was a Corporal from Ohio (I believe) who was awarded a Silver Star Medal. He was later transfered to Hq Co, 2nd Engr Bn (C) approximately August/September
1953. I would like to contact him if anyone knows

received a phone call from someone who will be communicating via US Mail about
DNA samples for checking against our deceased brother.

I am looking for any other members of the 2nd Infantry Division, Engineers
Battalion (C) who may have served, during the time my brother James E.
Bobovnyk served, in the Korean War. Anyone who may have known my brother or
who had a relative captured by the Chinese during the Korean War.

We never received my brothers remains from the Chinese. He still is buried
somewhere in Korea or China.

Comments: I had some pictures that we took in Korea if I can find them now I will send them to you
one thing I am interested in when we landed in Korea we had all of our civilkian clothes, shoes .picture albums .Etc. we had to put them in a duffle bag and they were supposedly sent to japan. I wonder what ever happened to them.

I can remember a hill 409 and Bloody ridge - When the Airborne was trapped we had to go in after them That was called the May Massacure We killed over 20,000 Chinese in a one week period.My company (Dog company) lost 69 men on sept I 1950. During the fight out of Kunuri we lost all but 57 men. I don,t believe we had names for the battles or hills .That started later.. The best reading i have found on the Korean war was a book called So this is War co athured by Bob Consdine. It is very accurate.
