Comments: Hello,
I am looking for information about my father Abe (not Abraham) Bloom who served as a Captain in the Engineers in the Korean War. His date of birth was 2/7/1914, I believe (date is certain, year is close if not correct).
He served, among other places, in the campaigns north of the 38th parallel and I THINK it was at the Chosin Reservoir but might have been at the Chongchon River. The family story is that he participated in "blowing up the docks" when US forces left the north. That may have placed him in the10th Engineer Combat Battalion of the 3rd Infantry Division.
I am trying to confirm exactly what unit he served in and any other information I can glean about his service.
Thank you for any help you can give including sources I might use.

Comments: Just got my dad discharge papers. I wrote to the National Personnel Records Center. They were unable to provide the records due to the fire in St Louis back in 1973. Happy to say my brother and I finally got his records. My dad was Sargent George C. Schaefer from Philadelphia, PA. He Was at Camp Kilmer in New Jersey from 1/24/1951 - 1/23/1952. He served in Korea from 1/1952 - 10/1952. He was with the Corps of Engineers, Company A, 10th Engineer (Combat) Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division. He didn't speak much of the war. I'm searching for anyone who may have known him or has any pictures during that time. If anyone can help it would be appreciated. Thank you.

His military records were burned in the fire at the national archives in 1973, so we are having trouble proving his responsibilities during the war to the VA. Does anyone recollect where the cooks prepared and brought the food to during the war? Were they bringing the food to the front lines? Any help would be appreciated. He served with Alpha Company if that helps any.

Comments: I joined C Co. 10th Engr Cmbt Bn, 65th RCT, 3rd Inf Div about March 23, 1951. Since my records indicated that I could type, the CO, Capt C E O'Brien, assigned me as Co Clerk in the CP, much against my wishes as I had joined the Army in Sept 1950 to serve in the infantry. Very early on June 5, 1951, an infantry unit requested through the CP radio that we send a platoon to string a rope across the flooded Hantan River, near our company position, so the infantry could cross more easily. The river was only about 5 ft deep, rapidly flowing east. Pfc Josue Cortes-Boisjoli volunteered to tie the rope around his waist and struggle against the current to the other side. He got about halfway across the river, about 30 feet, when the Chinese, hiding in heavy growth on the other side, opened up with machine gun and mortar fire. He died instantly. His body washed down the river and was recovered later that afternoon. About
18 soldiers of Co C were wounded, but no others were killed. Both company medics were there and both were seriously wounded. The infantry survived without injury as they were not on the sandbar where the enemy fire was directed. A small heliocopter, named Mechanized Angel, arrived with a pod on each side and began transporting the wounded to a MASH hospital. I still have a photo that I took of the heliocopter and our troops loading the wounded. That evening back at the CP, Emilio Maldonado Lazado, Jr., our supply clerk, and I found a parcel from Josue's family. It contained tins of rice and beans from Puerto Rico. We opened the tins and ate the meal in tribute to Josue. A 2nd Lt discovered us eating it and gave us hell. We felt that Josue would have wanted his fellow soldiers to enjoy it as a tribute to him. His fellow countryman, my good friend Emilio, and I said prayers for Josue's soul. That's all I can remember.

Comments: ALL Former Sky Bridge Battalion Soldiers...
- Some may remember me, I was the 10th EN Bn Executive Officer in 2002-2004 and corresponded with many of you, or put you in touch with soldiers in the unit during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.
- I noticed the remark regarding deactivation of the 10th Engineer Battalionn in "March 2003". That is not correct... we were crossing the border of Iraq and on our way to Baghdad in Mar 2003. The unit actually did deactivate with the Army's modular restructuring efforts in Jun 2004... we were actually the first to test the concept during a National Training Cneter rotation in Mar 2004. The engineer companies became "permanent" or "organic" E Companies in the infantry/armor battalions that they had habitually supported in the past. The battalion HQ was converted to a Bigade Troops Battalion that consisted of a Signal Company, Military Police Company or Platoon, Military Intelligence Company and various other unique functional elements. Similar restructuring has been occurring over the past 3-years acrosss the Army as each division is restructured to the new modular Unit of Employment and Unit of Action structure... obviously these transitions have been affected by the Army's continuing experiences and force requirements in Iraq.
- Now... I suspect the 10th Engineer Battalion's deactivation is short lived and if they are not already back, they will be soon. There are numerous modular engineer organizations included in the Army's new structure at UEx (onld Div) and UEy (old Corps/Army) levels and, given the 10th Engineer Battalion's battle history, it's pretty likely that one of those new elements will get the "Sky Bridge Battalion" colors. I'll make an attempt to find out where the 10th falls out in this plan and post an update in the future.

Comments: My dad was in the 10th Engineer Combat Battalion and it seems by the banner he is standing next to and he is in Company A. He has a few old slides from his Korean War days and a very few old photos from his time in the ETO of WWII. He was in the Engineers connected to the 3rd Infantry Division in both wars.
One of his Korean photos shows his tent that he shared with these following men.
Capt Carey
Capt Koehler
Capt Manning
Does anyone have any more on these men and the unit as a whole?
Thanks very much,
Barry S Kazmer
