Comments: I am looking for anyone who may have known my father, Lionel Moyes. I have a copy of his service record; and with the help of a friend, have figured out he was in the 279th Inf Reg, 45th Inf Div, Company H. He served two tours in Korea; and a total of more than 17 months on foreign land (I believe he was in Japan as well as one of the medals listed is OC MED (JAP)). His service dates were from Oct 24, 1950 to 17 Oct 1952.

I also have a picture of one of his fellow servicemen/friends. It appears it be on a base somewhere. They are standing next to 30 cal. machine guns.

Please contact me if you knew my father.

Comments: My dad, Ijellan "Jell" Akers, rarely talked about his service in Korea while I was growing up. It was not until a couple of years ago that he started mentioning much about the war to me. I know that Dad left his home in Floyd County, Kentucky for the Army. He was assigned to the 45th ID, 279th Regiment of the Oklahoma National Guard, and I believe that he served in a mortar platoon. Dad was at Heartbreak Ridge in the winter, I believe of 1952. While at Heartbreak Ridge, he was wounded in action from enemy gunfire and later awarded the Purple Heart.

In the past, my dad mentioned there was a little Korean boy that his unit pretty much adopted while at Heartbreak Ridge. Dad mentioned that he and the others nicknamed the boy Jimmy. From his descriptions, "Jimmy" would have been between 6 and 10 years old.

After recovering from his wounds, Dad was later shipped to Fort Knox, Kentucky where he finished out his service with a Military Police unit.

I would like to get more information on the 279ths operations at Heartbreak Ridge during the winter and possibly hear from those who may have served with my dad Pvt. Ijellan "Jell" Akers.

Thank you all for your service and sacrifices.

Sincerely,

Amos Akers

Comments: Martin was a first cousin of mine, I was born almost 10 years after his death. I'm interested in finding out more about him because I'm a soldier now and have been for 24 years. I have served twice in South Korea, and have always wondered about the circumstances of his death and where it happenend.

Part of this has been answered for me. I found out what division and regiment Martin was in on the Americacn Battle Monuments Commision website, and I have a copy of Corporal Campana's letter to my aunt dated 17 August 1953. Corporal Campana's heartfelt letter of condolence to my aunt showed me that he was a true friend of my cousin. Here is that letter, word for word.

August 17, '53

Dear Mrs Wynalda,

Realizing your great sorrow which you have recently sustained in the loss of your son, I wish to send my sincerest condolences.

I beg your forgiveness if I am stirring unpleasant memories. But I am sure you would appreciate knowing the circumstances under which your son so unfortunately met his death.

As we were members of the same squad I cannot help but join with you in realizing his loss.

Our position was on a ridge called: Kim Il Sung. We had been there for about five days. The enemy was throwing in mortar and artillery fire every day.

Our Command Post was located approximately up the middle of the hill. Martin, plus five other men, including our Lieutenant, the platoon leader, were in the Command Post and were talking. A round came in and unfortunately scattered fragments all through the Command Post. All of the men had to be treated.

Martin was one of the more seriously injured. Though treated immediately, and carried out without the slightest hesitation, he succumbed in route.

Again I pray your forgiveness. But I could not do a friend justice if I failed such a duty.

Please feel free to write anytime you wish.

Yours very sincerely, Cpl. Anthony Campana.

Both of Martins parents are long dead, another uncle of mine hase kept this letter for many years. I am ever grateful to Corporal Campana for this letter. Martin is buried in Enumclaw, Washington.

Questions I still have. Has anyone served with these two soldiers? What company were they in? Where is Kim Il Sung Ridge? Also one very general question. I know that Martin was an Infantryman, but what Military Occupational Specialty (MOS)was 01745?

Any answers are greatly appreciated. Thank you for your service to our great country.

SFC Jeffery B. Lopau, Co. 1/112 AR, Texas Military Forces

Comments: I seek information about carved wooden bear souvenirs from Hokkaido. A bear in my collection bears the inscriptions "LOUIS J. GIACOBBE" and "CAMP CHITOSE HOKKAIDO JAPAN". I am interested in establishing the date this bear was carved and in finding information about the service record of LOUIS GIACOBBE. I also seek information about whether sending such souvenir carvings home during the war was popular among our servicemen. I know of two examples of these inscribed carvings, and want to discover other examples.

I believe many Korean War soldiers brought/sent home these souvenirs carved by the indigenous Ainu people of Hokkaido during their stay in Japan. A number of these carvings depict a roaring bear with a colored banner draped over the bear's back. The banner bears the name of a particular soldier, the camp he was stationed in, the name of the island (Hokkaido), or other information particular to the serviceman and/or his company/regiment.

Please send any information to:

Thanks so much! - Vic Call

Comments: I am seeking information regarding my great uncle, Private Ruff Gene Queen, who served in Company I, 279th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division. Pvt. Queen was killed in action on 4 July 1952 on Old Baldy. I am currently seeking to obtain a collection of medals Pvt. Queen would have been authorized to replace the set issued to the next of kin. My question is: would Pvt. Queen would have been awarded a Combat Infantry Badge even though his service record makes no mention of one? I have no idea how long in combat he served until he was KIA, but didn't if the 30 day requirement would have been waived for those KIA.

Comments: I'm looking for anyone who might have location information on several hills on which the 279th fought in 1952 - '53: Camel, Star and Henry. Does anyone have any location data? (could include grid coordinates from the Army Map Service maps, or even "it's next to XXX Hill", etc.). These hills are somewhere in the Chorwon Valley, and I do not believe that "Camel Hill" is the same as "Camel Back Hill", another '52 - '53 Chinese-held position north of Jackson Heights, near Pyonggang.

I will be visiting this area in April with a group of 40th and 45th Division Vets - several of these gentlemen were involved in firefights on these hills, so I would like to locate them before we leave. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Roy Montgomery
