Comments: I was directly behind Sgt. Lonnie R. White on a high hilltop in North Korea
on April 20, 1951, the morning he died (KIA). He was hit in the chest and
abdomen numerous times by small arms fire from a so-called burpgun by
an enemy chinese soldier. I am alive today because of his bravery that
day.

Ironically, he was KIA on the very same day that he was due to be rotated
back home to the good old USA! Rest in peace, my friend.

Comments: My Uncle was KIA on 11/05/50. I am searching for any information related to the location of the 19th Infantry Regiment at the time of his death. He was buried in Korea and his body was not returned until 1953. The circumstances surrounding his death are unknown and any information would be very much appreciated. I understand that organizational changes have occured in the Army so even information regarding the size and geographical separation or proximity of a Regiment would be appreciated. I served 23 Years in the Air Force and have retired from the service. It is important to me that I try to pass on to my sons as much as I can about their Great Uncle. I appreciate any information you may be able to provide.

Comments: SUBJECT: Request for Purple Heart award to Jimmy Royce Cornell, RA 25 721 214, and Harold A. Wise, US 55 221 273

Statement of in line of duty injury report

I am Jimmy Royce Cornell, RA 25 721 214. From June 1952 to December 1952, I was assigned to Company A, 1stBn, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, APO 248, Korea.

On 11 October 1952, I was in the open, walking, with full combat gear, rifle, ammunition, and back pack, in the direction of my assigned Bunker, with PFC HAROLD A WISE, US55221273, on my right side, when a Chinese Artillery round bursted like a bomb, and shattering into many fragmented metal pieces, to the right side of PFC Wise.

PFC HAROLD A WISE, US55221273 took the majority of the immediate Chinese Artillery round burst and fragmentation, and died instantly. I was blown to my rear and left, about twenty-five feet, suffering concussion to my head and body, and I took fragmentation from the initial artillery round burst, in my right upper backside.

Immediately after the Chinese Artillery burst, other members of my unit came to our assistance. One of the unit members got me up off the ground and asked me if I was all right, I was completely disoriented and in shock. Unit members moved me up to the Bunker I had been preceding too before the random Chinese artillery round had messed up my day, and killed in action PFC Wise.

Company A, 1stBn, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division unit morning report establishes that PFC Wise was killed in action on the 11 October 1952. There is no entry of my injuries due to the Chinese artillery round burst, with that of PFC Wises death. I was not evacuated to the Battalion aid station, nor seen by medical personnel. In December 1952 I was reassigned to HHC, 1stBn, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division from Company A, 1stBn, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division.

After the Chinese Artillery round burst, someone had decided that as many able body men had to stay up at the bunkers to stop any immediate Chinese penetration of our lines. I never went to the battalion aid station. I remained at my duty station until my unit was relocated a few days later.

Again I was never seen by unit or other medical personnel prior to my discharge, 5 June 1954.

A year after my discharge I still had back pains and fragmentation oozing from my upper back. My current wife remembers using tweezers to remove several pieces of metal during first four years after my discharge. I have the scars in my upper back, were the fragmentation oozed from.

I am requesting that my military service record and my DD214 be corrected to show wounds received on 11 October 1952 in Korea, as a unit member of Company A, 1stBn, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry

After my research I noticed that PFC Wise was not awarded a Purple Heart as I am requesting for myself. I am requesting that Purple Heart be awarded to PFC Wise, and me.

We were also on the British Hospital Ship HMHS Maine, which transported us to Osaka, Japan. Comments: I was in the heavy duty mortar company located beside the barracks of Company A at Chickamauga. I knew many fellows in Company A because we were stationed in Chickamauga for some time. I transferred to the 24th Medical Battalion in Kokura, Japan, and I did not see any more of those fellows until our medical battalion was attached to the 19th Infantry Division in Korea. I was an ambulance driver and we shuttled back and forth from the front lines to bring the wounded back to our aid station. It was during one of my trips back from the front lines that we were halted by machine gun fire. At that time the 19th Infantry was retreating from the combat zone. This was on July 16, 1950. My ambulance was destroyed by enemy fire and when the 19th Infantry regiment arrived at the place where my ambulance was destroyed, one of the fellows from A Company of Camp Chickamauga commandeered a tank and the tank was disabled. We had to move back to the ditch line which ran alongside the road. One of the commanders of the 19th Infantry Regiment gave orders for us to load up in the trucks of the 19th Infantry Regiment and once we got loaded the North Koreans began machinegunning the truck and the soldier from the 19th Infantry Regiment A Company whose name I cannot remember was lying on top of me and was mortally wounded. If it had not been for him, I would not be alive. If I could see his picture, I would know him immediately, or any other pictures of guys from A Company. Roy Atkins, a childhood playmate of mine, also was in A Company. At the time I was at Chickamauga the company commander of the mortar company which was adjacent to A Company was Capt. Green. If you have any pictures of Company A at that time, perhaps I could recognize and name some of those fellows. There was also a Sgt Brown from my heavy mortar company; Robert Bailey (no relation) was with me at Chickamauga (from CT). He and I were good friends. Roger Bacon, also from CT, was with me at Kokura - I do not remember if he was at Chickagmauga. Please excuse my disjointed way of describing events - I am doing it as it comes to mind I would enjoy hearing from anyone who might remember me or any of the men I have named.

Comments: My dad never really talked about the K. War, just a lot toward the end of his life. Name - L.B. Barnhill Jr. he lived in Sur, Texas. He enlisted at 17, his father signed the papers. He was stationed in the Phillipines. before the war. He was in the 24th division, 19th In. in K. War. He was put at head quarters the last 3 to 5 months in country, driving a jeep, For a Corn. His unit got the Citiation over there. I believe its was the Pres. We have a few pictures from when he was over there. If anyone knew my dad over there please get in touch with me. He was a corporal, over there. His unit was also amushed going back to front line, there was only 3 of them left out of his unit.
