Comments: The 19th Infantry Regiment was located just to the north of the Injim river. I served there in 1956. My job was to guard the perimeter where the commanding officer was located. During a fierce completion in 1957, I was fooed as the best infantry enlisted man. I was E-4 at the time. Though it had been published that the war ended (an armistice was signed), this really was not true. The North Korean soldiers loved to harass us mainly at night. They also picked on the guards that were on duty at demilitarized zone (DMZ). One night I was involved in a shoot out with North KOrean agents who were trying to cross the river. I don't know of the outcome because it was a very dark night. I suppose this is why they chose that particular night. In December 1957, I was called tot he DMZ at midnight to pickup 2 North Korean soldiers and bring them to ROK (Republic of Korea) army intelligence unit a few miles south. Just before we got to our destination a PFC who accompanied me stopped the jeep and wanted execute the prisoners. I confronted him and persuaded to stay cool and get back on the jeep. From that moment on, I had to point my .45 to the driver and the prisoners. There were no paved roads, no trees standing, no town. Everywhere was destruction. But after many years South Korea has come a long way in rebuilding. The South Koreans were very nice people although they suffered a lot. I'm glad that I served in my unit in keeping the wreckless North Korean army from invading the south again.
