Comments: For the past year and a half I have been researching the Chosin
campaign. I was originally asked to write a script about the Marine
breakout on the West side. But the more I researched, the more I came
to realize that the Army's role has been largely ignored or minimized
(except for the great book East of Chosin). I have since switched gears
and have started focusing on the story of Task Force MaClean/Faith.
Appleman's book gives a great picture of the overall action but it is
lacking in the personal side. I am now attempting to develop an idea
of what the commanders were like (especially LTC Faith), the men of
the unit and the overall conditions during the campaign. I want to
know what the men were feeling early on, in the middle and during the
breakout. And I especially would like to know how survivors felt days,
weeks, months and years later.
If anyone would like to contribute to this project, please e-mail me.

Comments: I am seeking any information on my uncle, CPL William George "Bill" Hammerle. He was KIA on 1 December, 1950 during the breakout from the Chosin Reservoir. He was in the 1st Battalion, Company C, 32rd Infantry.
I have read an account of the breakout and I learned that his company was put into the lead. At one point during the breakout there was firing on the column of trucks by the enemy. Marine Fighter-Bombers flying overhead attempted to knock out the enemy, but they dropped a load of napalm on the lead vehicles.
I believe my uncle was killed by this "friendly fire." It was reported that many of the group were killed instantly or badly wounded from this accident.
After this the breakout disolved into small groups of men just trying to get to safety. The organized attempt to leave fell apart.
I would like to hear from any veteran who was there or any family members who would like to share information. My mother, CPL Hammerle's sister passed away April 1, 2006, she never knew what had happened to her brother.
