Comments: My dad was in this battle, was wounded and was treated in the field. He recieved the Purple Heart but has misplaced it and his records went up in a fire.
His name is James W. Johnson originally from St. Cloud, Mn. He was also a boxer in the Army-they called him Lefty or Jolting Jim. He was fighting under Capt. William T. Lyons on hill #284 when they came under attack. He needs to find anyone else who was at this battle and observed his injuries so he can get the benefits that he deserves. Any help out there would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Pam Kruschke

Comments: My friends and I (from South Philadelphia) joined the army in Aug. 1946. there were six of us ,the war was over and there was no work so we all joined for 18 months. We all thought that we could hang by our thombs for that time. We were all sent to Korea after basic training .
There was Joe Dallasandro, Ralph Olivo, Tony Nardello, Valentino Iadanza ,Tony Piccone , And myself John Clifton.
We were lucky that we joined because all of our other friends were drafted in 1950. So we missed the war and glad of that. All of my friends have passed on now , they were all great guys and I am the only one remaining .
It was nice that we were all in the 31st. at the same time. I don't remember the men that I was with in Co.B
The memory is about gone.

Comments: The Family of Joseph Mack Harper would like some help from the men who served with the Communications Platoon, Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment who were with the unit when they were stationed in Japan before going to Korea. Joe Harper had about 250 photos from the time he spent in Japan and the identity of most of the men is unknown. There is a boot camp photo of 22 men pictured with their names signed on the front. Many of these men were KIA or MIA in Korea. And there are many other photos of other men not in the main photo.

Joseph Mack Harper died at Chosin and his remains were never recovered. The Harper family has no photos or letters from Joe after he went to Korea. It is their desire to first identify the men in these pictures and then to share with others.

In Joe's Niece's own words.... I would be happy to forward any of the pix (group or otherwise) to anyone
who may use it for ID-ing or helping in any way... I am also willing to
share the pix to other families, which was an original hope of our family's,
sharing the wonderful things we found and sharing information to learn
about his life... we have no photos after he left Japan, so Korea pix would
be precious to us... But no, no one in other families has contacted me...

If you are a Veteran from this Unit, please contact Joyce at celestialprincess@cox.net so we can find out the names of these Heroes.

We remember that Freedom has a Cost.

James Harvey JR. wrote on April 14, 2006

City and State: BALTIMORE MD

Unit:

Service or Relationship: Family Member

Comments: I am one of 2 sons of James N. Harvey, who served as a combat medic in Korea. I am sorry to report that he has passed away on 18 March, 2006, of complications from lung cancer.

At the time James Harvey was stationed at Porkchop Hill, he was a Corporal.

General orders number 564, dated 2 Sep 1953, states the following:
CPL JAMES N. HARVEY, US51171977, Army Medical Service, United States Army, a member of Mecical Company, 31st Infantry, distinguished himself by heroic achievement near Mak Tong, Korea. On 16 June 1953, CPL HARVEY and his comrades proceeded to screen the area for some wounded members of another friendly patrol. As CPL HARVEY and his comrades moved over the crest of a hill, they noticed that two men were moving about the area. Upon advancing further, CPL HARVEY and his comrades were fired upon by the enemy. Seeing two friendly wounded, CPL HARVEY'S comrades laid down a steady stream of fire and enabled the casualties to crawl to safety. CPL HARVEY then administered first aid and assisted in evacuating them to the aid station. Then CPL HARVEY and his comrades made radio contact with four other friendly wounded and they moved through exposed positions, in full view of the enemy, and did not leave the area until they had carried the men to safety. The heroic actions of CPL HARVEY reflect great credit on himself and the military service.

Also listed on the general orders are the actions of three other men: CPL FLOYD L. HAMM, PFC HOWARD L. WINDER, and PVT DANIEL A. FLANAGAN.

My dad never told me any stories about the time he spent in the Korean War, except that he was made a medic in a hurry for this war, and sent right out to the front lines. On the first day there, he witnessed a soldier's foot being blown off; and administered first aid to the soldier. I have a few photos of his buddies out in the field. None of them have names written anywhere, so these men are anonymous to me.

I also joined the regular Army in the 80's as a medic. Luckily for me, I never had to serve in wartime. When I joined, the only thing my dad had to say was, "Good luck".

Now that he's gone, I'd like to hear a little about his friends in the Army. Please contact me with any information that you may have. The "forgotten war" is only a label. There are many of us who will never forget the bravery of our servicemen.

Comments: In closure to the Pro Patria outfit: For those who might have known of my years-long search for John R. Slack, a most memorable comrade who served with me at HQ Co 1st Bn 31st Inf Regiment, Korea 1951-52, I must provide this latest information, all of which came as a result of an on-going assist from former Saugonian and historical artist Jeff Fiovaranti and his pal Tim Perkins, a Viet Nam veteran. John R. Jack Slack, RA12370942, M/Sgt, U.S. Army, born 8 Jun 1931, died 9 Mar 1990 and was buried shortly thereafter at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery in Texas. The only survivor information available is "a sister Helen," married name unknown, address unknown, (who was married at Albany, NY years ago and moved to California; this info was provided by neighbors on Van Schoik Avenue in Albany when Beth and I knocked on every door on that street in 2002 looking for information on Jack, who lived at 17 Van Schoik at the time of his enlistment). Confirmation of the above details was defined by his Army serial number. Jack is buried at Section PG Site 16D, Fort Bliss National Cemetery. I wish that I could advise all the John R. Slacks uncovered in my search and whom I talked to over the years; they all were most gracious and interested, especially the Marine vet in Kansas or Iowa who said, at the end of a sparkling 40 minute telephone conversation, "When you find your pal, Tom, let me know if he's as good looking as me." I am indebted to those who kept up their interest and who often asked about the search, with deepest thanks to Jeff Fiovaranti and his pal Tim Perkins, aware of the unbreakable bonds we are sometimes gifted with. May that sparkler and memorable comrade, Jack Slack, rest in eternal peace.

Comments: Joined Fox Co, rifleman, rifle squad approx Sept 1951. Ended up in MASH hospital. Sent to Signal school to learn morse code 16 wpm or return to front line. (I learned!) Was transfered to 3rd Bat Hdqrs Co. Became radio repairman (always willing to trade my beer rations for coke). Bell and I hit the ditch when a quad 50 opened up as the jeep passed their position, funny (no). Sgt Strakes bawled out a 2-star General for disturbing his sleep. The Gen made sure he got the Comm supplies he needed!Memory is spotty, I regret knowing so many but can't remember their names.

Comments: Interested in finding out any info concerning my older brother SGT Hank Leenstra's service in Korea 1950-1951. He was KIA October 1951 at Heartbreak Ridge. He was a machine gunner assigned to HQ Company. Army says it has no info on awards, etc., due to records fire. Would like to provide his 9 surviving siblings with any info on his service and/or circumstances of KIA.

Comments: My uncle was finally brought home thru DNA. All immediate family members are deceased and I am interested to find anyone who knew my uncle, that I never met. He was only 19. I have no info as to the area or what battle he was lost in, what company or
unit he was in. Any info would be a help as I am trying to put together a history on Uncle Steve. All
I do have is his military picture and medals.
God Bless All Who Serve.

Comments: My Dad, William (Bill) Amen, was at the Chosin. I am looking for anyone who knew him. He had served in World War II, in the Pacific, so he was older in Korea (38) than most of the men. He was from Colorado. He got out of Chosin with a group of about 18 men. They passed through a village, at dawn, while the village slept. Once they were in the high ground, looking down on the village, they heard shouts and gunfire. When they looked back, another group of GIs were being gunned down. The village had awakened, by this time, and killed the American soldiers. In my Dad's group, there was also a young GI, who crawled away from the group, when they had stopped to rest, and pulled a pin out of a grenade, killing himself. His feet were frostbitten.
I am looking for anyone who may have known my Dad. He's been gone for almost 20 years.

Comments: I am looking for anyone who may remember 1st Lt. Windell W. Vickery. He was with K Co., 3 Batt. 31st Inf. Reg. 7th Inf. Div. He was wounded in the head on June 4, 1951. He received the Silver Star along with numerous other awards. We have an article from his hometown newspaper (Bear Creek, AL) copying a press release from the Army stating that Mr. Vickery had been awarded the DSC for his actions in Korea. This is the only info we have on this honor. Mr. Vickery died in 2001, but his widow would like to pursue this if he is indeed eligible. If you knew him, please contact me.
