Comments: I am a freelance writer from Australia visiting the Pusan area frequently for my primary work as a consultant engineer. I am researching events that took place on the Pusan defence perimeter during August/September 1950 during the Korea War.
I have recently visited the area on the road running east/west from Masan to Chinju, west of the town known as Chungam-ni several times, and the mountain pass known as "The Notch" in US Army records. Many things have changed in the last 55 years and South Korea is no exception, particularly the road system and the towns/villages. I am trying to clarify which of two separate roads actually is "the Notch". I would be interested to hear from any person that can relate a first hand account or memory of the Battle at the Notch on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd August 1950, and if memory survives the actual road routing as it was then approaching and decending the pass. Today there appears to be two road passes over this particular ridge in the immediate area. What appears to be an older road branches off the main newer road and follows the railroad directly up a narrow valley of paddy fields and has a short railway tunnel directly under the road through the pass, this road also crosses the railway either side of the tunnel, and the pass, by means of two railroad bridges. The other road further to the North of the first, on the same ridge line, appears to be a relatively new wider road with many hirpin bends climbing for approximately 2 miles on the East approach side. There is no railway anywhere near this road or at the pass at the summit ?.
By reading chapter X1V "Blocking the Road to Masan" of the US Army Records, and the movements of the reconnaissance force lead by Colonel Wilson westwards on the 1st August 1950, I would understand from two statements made that the pass and road to the south is actually "The Notch". The statements are as follows :Col Rhea to Col Wilson that "you had better be careful-that ground down by the pond is enemy territory". There is still a pond at the bottom of the West inclne to the pass on the old road, but not on the new road !. There is also the statement made that "enemy troops tried to advance from the railroad tunnel". The railroad tunnel only runs under the pass on the older road !.
Any contact, more detailed information or leads to help me progress my task would be greatly appreciated.
I am able to offer some copies of recent photographs of the two passes and the area taken in 2005/2006 which may help somebody as a memory jogger.
Regards,
Roger H Freeman.

After the battle he was placed in the 27th battalion, 25th division (we beleive). We are trying to put all of his medals together (he has 6 but we believe he is due more) He was wounded 4 times during his service. We have identified all that he has but would like to verify the wolfhounds patch from that time. We have have seen a round one with the wolf head facing left with "27th Infantry" and "Wolfhounds" on the outer rim. We would like to verify that this is the correct patch and find a place to buy one. If this sounds familiar to anyone, please let me know. He goes to the reunion at Ft. Benning almost every year.

Comments: Alton Whittaker was KIA in July '50. He was one
of a group detached from 29th Inf. and assigned
tdy to 19th Inf. after that regt. was so badly
mauled.
I am tying to put together info on my classmates
from high school who were KIA in Korea. Any
info from anyone who knows the details of Alton's
death would be appreciated.
