Comments: Researching on my British Grandfather's Naval history, he informed me of a friendship he made with the late SSgt. Anthony J Barone of the 19th-28th Bomb Squadron.
Their B-29 (Piloted by the late 1Lt. Robert Hollis Layton) was struck by Korean Yak-9 fighters near Seoul. The crew bailed over the Yellow Sea, and spent much time hiding from North Korean search parties. The crew were found and rescued by the HMS Alacrity, of which my grandfather was a gunner. He personally lifted many of the crew out of the water, unfortunately two of them, the pilot and A2c Paul Luther Miller, were captured as POWs.
My grandfather formed a lifelong friendship with Barone, up until Barone's death in 1999. He still speaks fondly of them being pen pals for all those years. Barone was a significant figure in South Florida, helping create a local Veterans Park (unfortunately I don't know where).
I wished to leave this entry as I gather more information on my grandfather's time serving in Korea, and to honour one of his old lifelong friends.

Comments: My father was CM SGT. Vaughn Dixon Hill, who was a Crew Chief of the B-29, Lemon Drop Kid during the Korean War, at Kadena AFB, Okinawa.
He was so proud of his service, and more importantly, the men he served with...he fondly spoke of his days in the USAF, and especially during the Korean War.
He later would be stationed at Ellington Field, and at Alconbury, UK (where I was born) Griffis AFB/NY and Clark AFB/Phillipines...and, at Sheppard AFB in Texas.
Dad passed away at the age of 83 in 2000, with full Military honors.
His time in the USAF was his life's purpose...he often said the discipline was what saved his life and turned him around...I wouldn't know. I never knew the man who wasn't always pointed in the right direction and doing the right thing, thanks to the Army Air Corp and the United States Air Force.

Comments: My father, Robert E.(Bob) Sturges, was the head of the 28th Bomb Group Maintenance Squadron and flew the Command Decision as Inspector Pilot with Don Kovic from 1950-1954. My mother, sister and I joined him at Kadena AFB from 1952 to 1954 and we frequently picked him up on the flight line after a mission. I never realized planes could fly with so much damage! He was recommended for the Congressional Medal of Honor after he saw one of the B-29's crash on take-off with a full load of bombs, and drove his jeep as far as he could into the closest rice paddy and attempted to rescue the crew. Unfortunately at least one bomb ignited and exploded, killing several. He was subsequently recommended for the Congressional Medal of Honor, however it was turned down but he received the Soldier's Medal from General Stearley, and years later, the Legion of Merit for another issue.
He was a pilot in all three wars: North Africa in WW2 and he later volunteered for Vietnam. By then he had been officially retired from flying and was recycled into missiles following the B-47s and B-52s, but they were desperate for pilots, so he flew Puff the Magic Dragon, the C-47 gunship, and volunteered on the gunboats that patrolled the river in between missions. He eventually became one of the most decorated officers in the AF, exceeding the generals.

Ben died April 6th, 2005. We will always fondly remember our "family" and the time with the crew of the "Lemon Drop Kid". We were always sad to have missed Jim and Nedra's visit at Christmas, because we had already left for Chicago to have Christmas with family. I have fond memories of Sunday night waffles with the Ratzburg family... Tom Bradshaw's visit at my parents home in Chicago (Elmwood Park)... and much, much more! I would love to hear from "any and all" :)

Comments: My friends' father was the Aircraft Commander:
Capt? Edward "ED" Bradfield of Rockville, IN.
Looking for any surviving crew members, or those who can share information about this plane and crew.
Mr Bradfield shared a story with me... as I built-up a 1/48 scale model of his "Raz'N Hell" B-29A during the Korean War.
He related the tale that his aircraft was likely the only B-29 to shoot-out one of it's own engines during the Korean War.
He said during maint. they forgot to replace the barrel-stops on one of the top-turrets. During the course of the mission, they were under orders to expend all ammunition before returning to base. One of the crew--not a gunner--wanted to shoot the guns, and he swiveled the turret and promptly shot-out their #2 engine when the guns depressed farther than they should have been able--due to the missing stops.
I modeled "Raz 'N Hell" with it's #2 engine shot-up and prop feathered, wheels down and preparing to land after this mission.
Ed Bradfield died a few years ago and I inherited his model. I would GLADLY pass it along to any surviving crew-member if interested. (It's BIG!)
Tim

Very specific question: Soviet MiG's claimed 3 B-29's December 6. 5th AF records describe B-29's, callsign "Beneficial", combat with MiG's December 6, two B-29's damaged. 28th BS records show 2 a/c damaged (44-62224 Wanderer and 42-63475 Houston Honey/Jolly Roger [possibly WWII not Korean era names I got elsewhere]) but say December 7. Was the 28th's call sign "Beneficial" at this time?
Any other info on this incident, those a/c, or 28th BS air combat any time during the war would also be interesting to me. Thanks.
