Comments: Hello all,

I am looking for anyone who might have known Capt.
Robert White who served in the 729th BS in Korea.
Unfortunately I don't know any dates. My husband is
his grandson and I don't think they ever knew each
other. It would mean the world to him if he could
learn something about his Grandfather. The thing
that got me started looking is that Robert's son
handed down a box that belonged to Capt. White, and
in it was a Zippo lighter with his Rank, name, serial
number, Bomb Squadron and that he was in Korea. My
husband has tried a few different avenues to find
information on him, but with him being active duty
himself, his time on the computer is limited. Any
help would be greatly appreciated.

The info I DO know:
He won the Distinguished Flying Cross award as a
First Lieutenant on 28MARCH1952.

He was a Kenmore Navigator at the time he won the
award.

His wifes name was Gertrude.

Another article says he was a B-26 Radar navigator.

He was from Buffalo, NY.

I am doing research for a web site, and would like to hear from anyone who knew my father, has stories about him, or could help me identify some people in his photos. I would also like information about his plane, "Miss Sandy", such as how many missions she flew, when she was decomissioned and what her final fate was.

Please contact me if you have any information.

Many Thanks!

Dear Sirs,

I am doing a research on a Turkish pilot, Lt. Muzaffer Erdonmez who served at 729th BS in early 1951. He was killed on a mission on 21.4.1951.

I would like to get in contact with the below given members of 452nd BW, 729th BSq, who were known to be friends of Lt. Erdonmez during the war.

Russ Barnes
Dick Leebrick
Bill Tonne
Virge Kuns
Robert L.Allred (MIA - 21.4.1951)
Joseph L. Farber (MIA - 21.4.1951)

All served at the 729th in mid 1951.

It is known that Lt. Erdonmez was killed while flying on a B-26C which had a serial number 44-35783. If possible, I would like to have a photo of this glass-nose. I do not know if it can be supplied from the National Archives or USAF. Any Vet may also have a photo of that aircraft in his personal album.

A photo of Virge Kuns and Lt. Erdonmez can be seen at http://www.tayyareci.com/hvtarihi/erdonmez/images/ucussonu200.JPG

Any help regarding Lt. Erdonmez and the above given names or their families are greatly appreciated.

With my best regards,

Batur Avgan

Comments: I am a Turkish researcher, researching the history of Turkish Military Aviation in collaboration with the History Branch of Turkish Air Forces (TuAF).

According to records find in the archives of the TuAF History Branch, on April 21, 1951, a USAAF A-26 Invader aircraft that was piloted by the Turkish Air Force Lieutenant Muzaffer Erdonmez was shot down over Wonch Ang-ni during a bombing mission carried out by 6 aircraft from the 729th BS. The A-26 usually flew with a crew of three people (at least two people). Since no other TuAF officers are reported as killed or wounded on April 21, 1951, American crew members must have been on board with Lt. Erdonmez. Lt. Erdonmez was awarded The Air Medal for his achievements just few days before he was shot down (I can provide a scanned image for the certificate of The Air Medal to those interested). The details about the bombing mission, the serial numbers of the aircraft involved, other crew members that participated in this mission are missing at the Turkish archives. I would greatly appreciate any assistance you may provide in completing these missing information. I would like to access sources that may provide details about the bombing mission in which Lt. Erdonmez was killed, and especially contact any surviving veterans that participated in this particular mission that took place on April 21, 1951. Thank you in advance for your kind concern.

Flew missions before and after idiotic searchlight strapped on. Also flew with Capt./Maj./Lt.Col. Johnson (he became Group CO) and two missions with Col. Fletcher showing him how to use the lower gunsight guard as a bomb sight. I believe I even flew one mission with the Marzullo of brickyard fame. Our bunch relieved Dave DeHaven's bunch for their return to the Big PX. Who's going to finish the 729th history?
