Comments: My father, Robert Pontius was a surgeon in the Naval Reserves and
wrote letters home while serving in the Korean Conflict.
The letters include:
1951- Bethesda Naval Hospital
1952
January -March:
Japan. Tokyo, Yokosuka. US Naval Hospital 2923
1952 March-April: LST 914
1952 May-Sept: LST 802 and 14th Field Hospital North of Pusan.
I am eager to make contact with anyone who may have overlapped
with his service, or anyone who could help me search archives for
news or photos that would complement the letters. I would like to
eventually get the letters in a book foo for my dad and our family.

Comments: In the fall of 1955 the LST-802 was cleaned up from the
Inchon operation and a major mission change converted
it to a minesweeper tender. The name Hamilton County
was added to the 802. As part of ComMinePac a loadlist
of minesweeping parts, helicopter spare parts, Clothing
and general stores were all added to the ship's support
mission to minesweepers (MSOs). I was its first
operational supply and disbursing officer (1956-57) and
V.W. Weatherby was the first commanding officer of the
Hamilton County after its conversion. The tank deck
was literally filled with minesweeping parts from deck
to overhead, and our first accomplishment was to
inventory and locate roughly where the parts were on
the tank deck. Following a harrowing trip to the
Western Pacific in 1956 it was home ported in Sasebo.
