Comments: During 1955-6 the LST 802 was converted to a
minesweeper tender for service in the Western Pacific.
At this time it was also given the name Hamilton
County, to honor its elevated status from large slow
ship (LST) to large slow ship with minesweeping and
many other kinds of supplies aboard. I was its first
supply officer following this initial outfitting. With
a flotilla of wooden hulled minesweepers (MSOs) we
engaged in test exercises of the MSOs integrity in
Catalina before deploying to the Western Pacific in
mid-1956. Our crossing the Pacific was so fitful
ComMinePac decided to make Sasebo the ships homeport.
Many stories of service aboard the Hamilton County are
included at http://navystories.net beginning with about
story #27, counting down from the top left column. The
typhoon off the coast of the Philippines in 1957 and
the ordeal of the Cumshaw Navy are well documented.
Sasebo was a great home port, and the Japanese people
were magnificent hosts. I have often wondered what
happened to the old T. Bob Settles (bob@bobandlois.net)

Comments: I served on the Chimon from 1952 to 1954. We went back and forth from Sasebo to Yakoska. Also served for a few months in 1951 before transferring to the Chimon on the USS Electron AKS-27. After serving on the Chimon I spent a few months on the USS Hector AR-7 before discharge in 1955. I was the only Electronics Technician on both the Chimon and Electron. (ET2)
