Comments: I am looking for members of my platoon. I remember Barthalomeu Welsh. Anyone who I get an opportunity to say hello would be terrific.

Keywords: My squad were all Puerto Ricans and they used to call me Papo. My unit again was: 9th Infantry Regiment - 2nd Infantry Division Charlie Platoon - Indian Head. I was in Korea from November 23, 1952 to September 21, 1954.

Comments: I'm a teacher in South Korea and I study the Korean War. In my research I was surprised by the number of casualties, specially the number of MIAs, from K Co., 9th Inf Reg. and I would like to learn more about what happened in Hoengseong with the plan to possibly write a book about it and the hope that it may lead to finding those that are still missing.
K Co also seems to be one of the first U.S. units with racially integrated soldiers making it even more significant.
I have been to Hoengseong and Wonju and I live in Jecheon(Chechon) so I'm happy to recieve and reply to any replies or questions to any of those places/battles!

Comments: In March 1899, the 9th Regiment left Madison Barracks in Sacketts Harbor, NY to sail to the Philippine Islands (PI). The Regiment was ordered to the PI to help defeat the Filipino army which was fighting to block the US from taking control of the islands that we won after defeating the Spanish during the Spanish-American War. The Regiment was still recovering from the battle and disease casualties it suffered in Cuba while going up San Juan Hill. The Regiment arrived in Manila in April 1899 and was thrown into the battles against the Filipino army and then guerilla bands. The Regiment was engaged in actions on Luzon Island from 1899 until June 1900 when it sailed to China to fight in the Boxer Rebellion. The Regiment returned to the PI in May 1901 where it continued to fight Filipino guerillas. It suffered the Massacre of Balangiga on 28 September when "C" Company was ambushed on Sunday morning in Balangiga Village on Samar Island/PI. The company suffered more 70 casualties. The Regiment's "G" Company counter-attacked the guerillas the next day and burned down the village and retrieved the mangled corpses of their comrades. The troops took the "Balangiga Bell" which was a church bell used to signal the attack. The Bell is now in Korea with the 2nd ID. So the current 9th Infantry has a long history of fighting guerillas beginning with the Indian Campaigns, the Filipinos, the Viet Cong, and now AlQueda terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan. Keep up the Fire! GOD BLESS-SAVE THE TROOPS-FAMILIES

Comments: My dad had a brother who served in the 9th inf. 2nd inf. division Ray Willoughby. What we would like to know is, does anyone remember him and where he actually died?

There has been some doubts in the family that the body sent home was not his. Only one of his brothers actually saw the body, but he was very vague about what he saw.

We would like to know something,my dad is 84, and time is running out.I saw the picture on one of the pages of a soldier with my uncles name, and he was from the area my dads family was from in Ohio, but the pictured soldier was shown to be born the same year as my dad, which is impossible.

Comments: On Sunday 28 September 1901, the 9th Infantry Regiment's "C" Company, was ambushed by Filipino insurgents in the village of Balangiga/Samar- PI. Out of a company strength of 78, 74 were casualties including the company commander, executive officer, and surgeon.

The Regiment's "G" company counter-attacked the next day and burned the village. The church bell used to signal the attack is now at Camp Casey, Korea as part of Regimental property/war memorials.

"C" Company was sent to Balangiga to fight Filipino insurgents as part of the Army's counter-insurgency operations. The company had been in Peking, China as part of the occupation forces following the Boxer Rebellion when the 9th Inf Regt was part of the Allied Relief Expedition which rescued the foreign nationals trapped in Tsientsin and Peking ("55 Days at Peking"). It was at Tsientsin that the regimental commander, COL Emerson H. Liscum- a Civil War, Indian War, and Spanish-American War wounded veteran, was killed in action. It was Liscum who inspired the Regimental motto - "Keep up the Fire" as he lay dying in a ditch and issued his final order. And the Liscum Bowl the regimental sterling silver punch bowl is named after him. The regimental crest's imperial dragon and the nickname, "MANCHUs," also come from the fighting in China when the Regiment attacked Peking and later served there on occupation duty.

Hope all have a good MANCHU day.

Keep up the Fire!

Comments: My Daddy served in Korea. I am not sure where but he was in the 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, Charlie Company. Approximate dates were Nov of 1950 to July of 1952. I am searching for any information at all including stories and pictures. He is deceased now nearly 10 years. His name was Herbert Scott Decker. My Daddy was approximately 190 years of age. His battle buddy was Robert L. Tetrick. I do not know the battles they fought in but I know they ate alot of split pea soup and had three pair of socks between them and my Daddy used to put the wet socks next to his body to dry in freezing weather so his buddy would have a dry pair to wear. I know that my Daddy was promoted quickly due to the fact that their original company was wiped out leaving approximately 3 of the original company until more troops were sent. If you have pictures or stories please contact me. God Bless!
