Comments: My brother was killer in Korean War sometime around 1950. His was in the army and his name was William B Hoffman and was from Baltimore Md. He was station in Japan, just before the Korean War started. I think the unit was either 124th or 24th Infantry and I think General Dean was the commander,in charge of that outfit.

I know when the war ended their wasn't to many men in his outfit suvived, the war. So if you were one of the few who made it home and knew my brother I would like to hear from you. We only received a few letters from him, while he was in Korean, before he was reported MIA (about 1950).Then in 1952 we received a telgram, from the war department saying was killer in action.

The family never could understand what happen in those two years, we were hopeing he was still alive.

Historical records I have recently read of the performance of task force smith, 19th, 21st and 34 Inf. regiments during July 1950 are not very complimentary, and I would like to exchange information with other survivors such as myself regarding the events of that time. Having tried to locate Task Force Smith in early July, and been involved in defensive actions in Chonan, Kumm River, Tajon and Pusan perimeter.

Comments: My brother, Pfc. Alfred Guiel, was listed as MIA on 20 JUL 1950. My family was notified by telegram on the 20th of August. Later, we received a post card from a ham radio operator with Alfred's own words, "On my way back to the states. Everything OK". He was flown to Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee, MA which was about five miles from his home in South Hadley, MA.

I only know that he was in the 34th Regiment of the 24th Infantry Division, battalion and company unknown; but I vaguely remember him saying it was a rifle company. He said he had been wounded in action west of Masan about 60 miles south of Taejon.

In an interview with repoters, he was not certain when he was wounded. He also told reporters that he thought he was hit by rifle fire, but I think he told me at one time that he and his squad might have been strafed by an American aircraft.

He thought that he was the only survivor of his squad. The others were running to take cover under a bridge, while he, whether before or after being hit, took cover behind the foundation of an old building.

His company was sent into action only days after the initial response by Task Force Smith and must have been poorly trained and equipped. After fifty years, it is doubtful that anyone will remember him, especially if the rest of his squad was killed that day, but I would like to learn more about the events, and maybe which company he was in, from someone who was there.

John Guiel

Comments: Hi, I am researching my wifes uncle who was unfortunately killed in Korea. We would like to make contact with any one he was a prisoner of war with, or had served with in the 34th Infantry. His name is SFC. Harold R. Ray RA35-411-588, of HQ. Co. 1st Battalion 34th Inf. Reg. 24th Division. He was stationed at Camp Mower before the war. He had just gotten his wife and 2 daughters to Japan 2 weeks before he had been activated to go to Korea. I have a number of documents on him before he went into Korea. But nothing after he left Japan for Korea on 1 July 1950.Unfortunately, St. Louis has informed me that his records have all been burned in the fire.We are trying to get his decorations issued as his widow recieved nothing beyond a nice letter from MacAurthur which she appreciated. She is well into her 80's now, but fortunately with a good memory. What I do have is a very detailed letter from a Sgt.Takeshi Kumagai RA10733743 of Hq and Hq Co. of the 34th Inf. Reg. It is Dated 27 Nov 1950. He was a prisoner with Sfc. Ray, and after he escaped wrote a very detailed letter to his widow telling of their captivity together and of how he was killed as a POW by a US Jet aircraft strike. I just found out this week that he died in 1989 as I was really looking forward to meeting him. I am now going to try and contact his family to see if they knew any one he kept in contact with from the POW camps. SFC. Ray was taken prisoner near Taejon on 20 July 50. In Sgt. Kumagai's letter, he said that he was put in for a citation for action at Taejon. I would like talk to anyone who was at Taejon with the 34th, and may have known him. The letter says that many men of the 34th, were taken into Taejon as prisoners, He writes that they marched out of Taejon on 30th July, arriving at Chochiwan on the 31st. After spending 6 days there in an old fire station, They were then marched to Seoul. Sharing whatever they had. They arrived in Seoul about 20 August 50. They stayed there for about 30 days. They left Seoul on about the 19th of September, after the Inchon Invasion which they knew nothing about. After leaving Seoul, in about 10 days the sick prisoners were put into Ox carts if they couldnt walk. SFC RAY was to sick to walk, and was put into one. About 15 Carts went ahead of the main group of prisoners. About the 2nd of October the prisoners all regrouped at a small village called Suan. The carts left again early the next day ahead of the other prisoners. On about the 3rd or 4th of October at about 7am, the Ox carts were straffed by an American Jet. A few days later, the prisoners regrouped with the survivors, and Sgt. Kumagai learned of the death of his friend, SFC. Ray. 11 men had been killed in this friendly fire straffing. I have several letters showing where after Inchon, the Army located his buried body at a Cemetary, then lost the ground he was buried in, then they negotiated the return of his body in 1955. If anyone can help me speak with any of the prisoners of this group, I would appreciate it. Mrs. Ray recieved his footlocker from Japan after his death. She never wanteed to open it and put it into her attick for 49 years. She let my wife, Myself, and my mother in law open in march of this year. It had his Dress uniform with all of his ww2 Decorations from the 95th Infantry(WW2 POW Captured in Metz with his company), documents, and a lot of personal items in perfect condition but with a bad odor that did finally air out. We were proud to have seen these. Now if I can get his decorations issued, and meet others who knew him we would all be very gratefull. If any one would like to contact me, please do so.
