back. It was left behind on the Talladega Dec.1965 in
his duffel bag along with gifts he bought for my mom.
He served on the ship from Aug. 1964 to Dec. 1965. He
was injured during an assault landing with the
Marines. I would like to find a cruise book or
information on the Captain at the time, or if someone
out there somewhere found it. His name is Calvin

Comments: I just found this site. I was recently at an auction and purchased a 19x15 framed picture of the USS Talladega inscribed with James Keener SN. At the same auction I also purchsed his Meritourious service metal, ribbons and presentation box. I do not know anything about the gentleman that these things belonged to. My father was a US Army Air Corps Ranger in WWII and would never give up his metals or any other memento that he hung onto from the war. I purchased the items, because for some reason it bothered me that they were being sold like useless yardsale goods. I was wondering if anyone knew James W. Keener or could tell me how to find out who he was. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The book was published in 1944. When was the Talladega first launched?

Comments: Surfing the web and found your site. I made two cruises aboard the "T." First as a Marine replacement headed to Japan, later to Hawaii. Sailed three times on APA's. The 210 was the other ship. I can't remember if it was the "T" or 210 that took our battalion to a landing at Iwo Jima in the Fall of '54.
As a Marine there wasn't much to do on the ship. Some men were assigned mess duty. I recall I was sea sick for about a week, no fun. Hit a storm shortly after leaving San Diego. The waves and spray breaking over the side caused an interesting incident. While waiting to go below for chow a flying fish was caught by a Marine just in front of me. He held in in his hand and said he was going to ask the cook to cook it for him. The fish didn't look too appetizing to me. I can't remember what the cook did with the fish but I know he didn't cook it. I only had beans and bread for breakfast one time in my life and that was aboard the "T."
Most of the time troops would lounge around the deck, sometimes do PT, read or gamble. To me a treat was to go down the hold to watch a movie. I didn't have any contact with the crew. As a Marine I was amazed at the casual morning inspections the deck division would have before going on duty. Not like a Marine inspection at all.
If anyone has photos of LCVP's loading or headed to the beach that can be scanned I'd appreciate having them emailed. I only took a few photos while aboard and they are worth sharing.

I fell down the boat deck hatch in 52 and was in

think of a few. Rogers, Poole, Jenkins,Sadrin,
Mcclelland, johnstone.Maybe you remember I played
the piano in the mess hall, also played the trumpet. I also had a harley which I sometimes
parked at the 5th st. landing. I would love to
communicate with old shipmates over old times. I
knew a lot of crew members in all sections of the
ship.Do you remember why we wen't to Hawaii for
drydock for three months? I sure hope somebody
remembers.Hope to here from someone soon.
