Comments: I rode her in Jan 1951 from Oakland to Hawaii on my assignment to Hickam AFB. I was detailed on the ship to the break out crew. Scaling the ladders with the goods was quite trying and challenging. Fortunately, we were allowed to set up cots on the hatch cover outside the cold locker, a big improvement over the other passenger racks. We always had access to the locker and had goodies whenever we wanted. The weather was quite rough, even the sailors were sick; I had no problems. Getting off the ship, I learns what sea legs are, the ground rolled all day long. Returning to the states 2 years later, I rode her sister ship, the Jefferson. That time, I volunteered for the same job. It was a pleasant trip.

Comments: For skillful maneuvering of his ship in the Inchon Amphibious attack Sept. 1950, despite hazards
of extreme tidal and current conditions, and constant danger from floating enemy mines, The
Bronze Star Medal with Combat V was awarded to : Captain Charles A. Ferriter, USN, USS
President Jackson-APA-18. Well Done APA-18.
