Comments: My dad--Harold R. Butler from Salem, MO--was on a minesweeper during the Korean War. I am the oldest of his three daughters and though he spoke very little about his time in the military I was always very curious and retained some of his stories. He told about two minesweepers striking mines. I couldn't recall the names but after reading entries on this site I'm sure it was the Pirate and the Pledge. Being a little girl at the time, the story that I remember most was about Dad's friend who had tattooed his fiancee's name on his forearm--only to receive a dear John letter from her during his deployment. He covered her name with a panther tattoo after that! (I think dad used this story as proof that tattoos could be a bad decision.) The story left me sad because the young man was assigned to one of the two minesweepers that were lost. I've tried to recall his name and after reviewing the information on the Pledge I believe it was GG Smith. My Dad passed away 5 years ago in Columbia, MO. I wish I had come across this site for him years ago. I was so proud of him. Think he may have served on the Swift.

Comments: I know this is a long shot, but worth a try. My father Glen L. Shrum was on one of the mine sweeps during Korean war. Not sure which on, but I seem to remember him speaking about the Swift. Have some photos of time there.
My father left Korea and returned to states and served in Com-mine pack 113 until he was transfered to the Admiral Barges as Skipper and retired in 58. So, if any reading this remember him I would sure like to hear from you.
Thanks for you help,
Rex Shrum
