Comments: My dad, Emeterio Valdez or AKA Val, has always told
of his experience while being held by the Koreans as
a detainee after the ship experienced some kind of
attack. Him and at least 5 others were held for a
short period of time before later being surrendered
over to a Canadian troop and then back to American
forces. Does anyone know of such an experience?? Id
love to know more about this from maybe someone who
also has a family member who shared the same
experience. Please contact me if you know anything
that may lead me to some anwers as to what happened.

Comments: Hi, my father passed away in September and I would like to write a book about his experience on the USS Carmick during the Korean War. He was a boatswain mate and he was in charge of the locker that was nicknamed "Tokyo Bar." He sewed bells into his Levy's and once saved a degaussing boat during a typhoon. Can anyone give me more details about their time on board and names of the ship mates. He passed away before I could get more information.

Comments: I was assigned to the USS Carmicm from 4 July 1950 until April 1952, when I was transferred to her sister ship the Thompson (DMS 38) In readying this page there are a couple of things that I do not see. When we lef San Diego going over to Japan, the deoured our course to Wake Island, where we patroled around the Island for a couple of days. It was not until we left that we found out the President Truman and General McArthur had been meeting there and that is why we divered. We spent allof November 1950 sweeping the big harbour of Chinnampo. The harbour was so big that we only made one pass in, and then had to ancor for the night right in the middle of the minefield. No one got any sleep
I remember our CO, a LT Commander by the name of Marqets (?) On newyears 1950 we were in Inchon harbour, and the CO had the gunners mate bring up 5 gallons of 190 grain alchol. They put it into the big coffe ern in the galley and put tomatoe juice and grapefruit juice in it, and the old man got on the loud speaker and wished us a happy new year. Another thing that I do not see anywhere is where we got rammed. We had taken on stores and ammo all morning, as we had been out a long time and were out of everything. The Admiral on a Cruiser, I think it was the St Paul wanted to go into Sasebo, and as we were one of the fastest ships in the pacific fleet he had us lead the course, 1000 yards in front of the cruiser. It was very foggy. About 2 hours into the trip I was admid ships and the siren, foghorn, bells and everything starte blaring. I looked on the port side and about 30 feet from me was a ship about to his us. It hit us midships and tore the quad 40 MM off it landing. As best as I can remember it was a US Friget, and I think it was the USS Glendale. We went into to Wonsong harbour and repair ships came along side and welded steel to our side so we would not sink. We limped into Sasebo and went into drydock there. Boy that was good duty. Ashore every morning by 10 up at moma sons house. I have no idea on the dates of this. I was a 3rd class PN, and some of by good friends were 3rd class FC James Shanahan (now lives in Tachappi), 3rd Class BM Bill Mantoff (who became police chief in Tachappi and was shot and died), and BMSN Don Dahlstrom (my cousin) who lives in Fresno. It really was a roudy crew, and I thnk most of us wore Levis.

“...she patrolled off both coasts of Korea...”
Carmick (DD-493) was launched 8 March 1942 by Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Co., Seattle, Wash.; sponsored by Mrs. H. L. Merrill, and commissioned 28 December 1942, Commander W. S. Whiteside in command.
On 10 June 1945, she entered Philadelphia Navy Yard for conversion to a high speed mine sweeper, and on 23 June 1945, she was reclassified DMS-33.
On 27 August 1945, Carmick cleared Norfolk, Va., for the Pacific, arriving at Okinawa 15 October for minesweeping operations in the Yellow Sea. She remained in the Far East to support the occupation until returning to San Francisco 20 April 1946. With San Diego as her home port, Carmick made one tour to the western Pacific in the summer and fall of 1947, and conducted local operations until the outbreak of the Korean War.
She cleared San Diego 4 October 1950 for duty in United Nations' efforts in Korean waters. Operating with TF 95 out of Yokosuka, Japan, she patrolled off both coasts of Korea, providing fire-support and minesweeping operations.
From 29 October to 3 December, she penetrated the dangerous harbor at Chinnampo to sweep mines, and carried out this difficult assignment so well as to earn the Navy Unit Commendation. She returned to San Diego 21 November 1951 for overhaul and training.
Carmick cleared San Diego 7 May 1952 for her second Korean tour, during which she patrolled off Yang Do Island, bombarded the rail center at Songjin, and provided gunfire support for minesweepers through February 1953. She returned to Long Beach, Calif. for overhaul 14 March, and in June resumed a schedule of exercises and services to the Fleet Sonar School at San Diego.
After pre inactivation overhaul at San Francisco Carmick was placed out of commission in reserve 13 February 1954. She was reclassified DD-493 on 15 July 1955.
USS Carmick received three battle stars for World War II service, and the Navy Unit Commendation and five battle stars for Korean War service.
