Comments: Have attebded 5 reunions thusfar, but not at any OKIE reunions. Iwas instrumental in putting together the Cavalier Reunion in 2000 at Branson, Mo. and am now putting together the 2002 Reunion in Las Vegas, Nevada. I made many friends and contacts in Branson and would welcome the opportunity to do one for the OKIE in some year after 2002 ( I am going to the Skagit Reunion in Buffalo as well as the Cav in Las Vegas in 2002).
As I am sure
you are already feeling the pinch of the older
ages of our shipmates, and the dwindling numbers at our reunions, I wonder about the acceptance of the other amphib ships to a proposal to create an AMPHIBIOUS ASSOCIATION. What do you think?

Comments: My name is Gordie Clausen. I was transferred to
the Okanogan upon completion of boot camp about
May 1955. We set out for sea almost immediately
after I reported. I was given a task of chipping
paint below deck at the bow. Up and down, up and down, there had to be something easier to do. I
asked around and learned the ship needed a "dental
striker". I applied and worked for Dr. Lealand
Fletcher and DT3 Arnold Brown. A year later, I
was transferred to DT school. The crew was great!
As doc, I did things I never should have done, but Dr. Fletcher was a good instructor. I drilled some teeth and filled some when your pain was too great to wait. My best friend was Bob Frakes, a "Snipe" who was assigned about the same time as I. Bob and I had many great times together in San Diego and Long Beach. I recall maneuvers off of San Clemente Island. I flipped a coin with Wally Wallenbeck (a corpsman) to see who would get to make a landing with the Marines in the peter boat because both of us wanted to go over the side. I lost. From the deck I watched a wonderous display of firepower only to discover later that Wally's landing craft sunk and I believe seven Marines were lost. I have never forgotten them!
