drove a 5-quarter-ton ambulance off of a low bridge over a
mountain stream, landing tipped on its roof in the shallow water
(with me sucking water), in the middle of a night time blackout
road march--I told them I was night blind, damn it! Me and the
medics riding in the back of the truck just jumped out
unhurt--and then rolled the truck back over right side up and I
drove off; those were indeed the days! We were 105mm howitzers
and almost always in the field at the DMZ--no playing around
there--1972-73.

passing a duce and a half at about 30 miles an hour and he went
right under the truck just behind the front tires next to us
and I thought for certain that he was dead. I pulled over to
the side of the road after I passed the convoy and there he

Comments: You have a visitor at the gate. Could be the Yobo, or maybe
Papasan on his bicycle come to deliver yaki man du, ramen,
etc....ahhh those were the days!

Anyone who has ever served in Korea and watched MASH on
televison can relate to the wickedly awesome similarities
(albeit a tad exaggerated on tv as standard hollywood fare)of
the characters and situations depicted in the series.
Everytime I heard that PA system blare on MASH, it would take
me back to Camp Hawkeye and our PA system which announced
visitors, mail call and any number of events and summons.

Been to Nam? Namyang that is! This was our calling card way
up there on the mountain. Our claim to the brotherhood of
solitude and isolation. This quote was a mainstay od ours back
then.

Once again. trying to get C Btry, 1/2 ADA, Camp Hawkeye,
Namyang, ROK on the map. Where are we now? Class of 79-80,
plus or minus, no matter.

My year in Korea at C Btry, 1/2 ADA stands out as the craziest,
yet also the best of my 20 years of military service. It was
some kind of controlled chaos because although we partied like
it was 1999, we had a clear sense of duty, and our mission
there was clearly defined. I would never see that again
throughout the rest of my career. We had teamwork and esprit
de corps, (which the rest of the army preached but did not
practice) unlike any I would ever experience again in my army
career. Sadly, the remainder of my army career would be
throughout the evolutionary peace time army of the 1980's, with
its drastic changes in political correctness, cleaning up of
language and behavior to absolutely laughable extremes, the dog
eat dog, everyone for themselves mentality, the just because
you were here awards and commendations system, the time in
service cuasi-automatic promotion system that all but
guaranteed an easy climb all the way up to E5, and worst of all
the monotonous, soul-sucking beauracratic oversatuation of that
era. From my experience in Korea, I would take with me an image
of the army, which (maybe it was me) it just could not live up
to. I am proud to have served, and am proud of our army's
latter day perfooance and accomplishments, but an
impressionable young soldier's mind was made up forever and for
good from June 1979 to June 1980 while serving with C Btry, 1st
Bn, 2nd ADA, Camp Hawkeye, Namyang, ROK.

Hi,

Currently only veterans of the Vietnam Conflict are afforded

the time since the 1962 admitted RVN Agent Orange / Dioxin
start date, current end date is the end date for RVN service,
per the DVA. I was in an exposed unit, one of many and in many
countries, not recognized by the DVA.

That's why I created a petition to The United States House of
Representatives, The United States Senate, and President Barack
Obama.

We the undersigned petition the US Senate, US Congress and the
President of the United States to enact legislation that makes
ALL veterans have equal presumption of exposure to Dioxins
while in the service of the United States at any location or
unit. We feel that ALL veterans MUST be treated equally with
respect to Dioxin exposure by the US government and Department
of Veterans Affairs.

NOTE: Veterans must also still prove they have a recognized
condition, that maybe caused by Dioxin exposure, during or
after service to get DVA benefits.

Any one 18 can sign.
If effected vet make sure you add your statement in comment

Currently only veterans of the Vietnam Conflict are afforded
this in a limited presumption, Boots on Ground legislation,
if they were in the Republic of Vietnam (Served in the Republic
of Vietnam between 1/9/62 and 5/7/75) per the Department of
Veterans Affairs. In fact any current end date for any location

Comments: On Wednesday 18 August 1976 at 1040 hours in the morning, a United Nations Command (UNC) work force of five Korean Service Corps (KSC) personnel accompanied by and UNC security force,
including the Joint Security Force (JSF) Commander, Captain (P) Arthur G. Bonifas of Newburgh, New York, First Lieutenant Mark
T. Barrett of Columbia, South Carolina, and one Republic of (South) Korean Army (ROKA) officer started to prune a large tree in the vicinity of UNC Check Point #3.

This tree partially obscured the view between UNC Check Point #3 and UNC Check Point #5.

In addition the un-pruned tree was also blocking the view of the Bridge of No Return from Freedom House. Shortly after the KSC work force arrived at the tree and began to cut it back, (North) Korean People's Army (KPA) personnel appeared
at the work site.

For a short time, the KPA security force observed the pruning without apparent concern. Suddenly, the KPA security force commander demanded that the JSF commander cease pruning or there would be trouble.

Captain Bonifas did not order the operation stopped. Senior Lieutenant Pak Chul of the KPA, seeing that he was losing control, took off his
wristwatch, wrapped it in his handkerchief and put it in his pocket. Another North Korean rolled up his sleeves. Lieutenant Pak then shouted MI KUN UL CHU KI GI CHA.

Translated, it means, Kill the U.S. Aggressors.; the UNC security force was attacked by a superior force of 30 KPA guards wielding pick handles, knives, clubs, and axes. Senior Lieutenant Pak jumped on Captain Bonifas from the back forcing him to the ground where Bonifas was beaten to death. 1LT Barrett was also attacked.

The KPA soldiers used the mattox and axes the tree trimming detail was using prune the tree as weapons.

The North Korean attack was broken up when a UNC soldier drove his 2 1/2 ton truck into the fight and over Captain Bonifas to protect him.

The UNC Security Force then withdrew but not before two American Army Officers were murdered and, a ROKA officer, three Korean Augmentees to the US Army (KATUSA) and four US enlisted
men were wounded.

.More:KoreanDMZ.FlagCloseAlong the border of North Korea and
South Korea, there is an area called the demilitarized zone or
DMZ, for short. This area acts as a space between the two
countries, which have remained hostile against each other for
more than sixty years. Despite the misleading name, the area is
lined with soldiers on both sides. What is occurring there is
something of a posturing stand off. There is open hostility
from the North Korean and South Korean soldiers and personnel
in the DMZ that occasionally erupts into violence. Some
soldiers and personnel from the United States are allowed in
the DMZ and they have been caught up in some of the violence -
most memorably during the 1976 Ax Murder Incident.

In the DMZ, there is an area known as the Joint Security Area
or Panmunjom. There is an invisible military demarcation line
through this area. In the past, there has been some leeway
concerning how far over the line members of each side's
security detail were allowed to cross. This all changed on
August 18, 1976.

In August of 1976, a group of men was appointed to go out
on Operation Paul Bunyan. This operation would take them over
the military demarcation line and into North Korea. They were
going to remove branches from a tree next to the Bridge of No
Return. These branches were blocking the line of site from a
South Korean guard post. Apparently, the tree had been trimmed
on previous occasions with no problems on either side. On
August 18, 1976, Operation Paul Bunyan began. A group of two
U.S. military officers, one South Korean officer and eight U.N.
security workers went over the line, presumably expecting a
brief landscaping mission.

When the group representing the South Korean side arrived at
the tree, a group of North Koreans told them to leave. The U.S.
military officers ignored their demands and continued with
Operation Paul Bunyan. This angered the leaders of the South
Korean group, who allegedly ordered their men to attack the
group and kill the United States officers. The Americans and
South Koreans were outnumbered by a great deal. Despite the
fact that their attackers were only armed with axes, none of
them escaped uninjured and three were brutally murdered. Both
of the United States officers were among the dead. Their names
were Major Arthur G. Bonifas and Lieutenant Mark T. Barrett.

The 1976 Ax Murder Incident was filmed by a corporal in a
nearby building. In the film, you can clearly see the North
Koreans attacking the men involved in Operation Paul Bunyan.
They even attacked one of the officers while his back was
turned. Pandemonium broke out as the enraged group of North
Koreans wielding axes attacked, but it was quickly over. In the
United States, there was debate over how to retaliate. It seems
some officials thought the U.S. should bomb North Korea. This
idea was nixed.

Three days after the Ax Murder Incident, a large group of ROK
(South Korean military) and U.S. troops crossed the military
demarcation line in Panmunjom. Their mission was to remove the
offending tree completely. They were accompanied by numerous
military aircraft. Unlike their predecessors, they were able to
complete their mission without incident. Since that time, the
military demarcation line has become more strictly enforced,
but hostilities still erupt sporadically
