When the guards would open the DMZ gates for us to go into no mans zone on a night ambush or day recon and lock us in. We would trade beer to the korean soldiers for martial arts training. Getting my orders from S2 then giving my operations order to my squad, checking their equipment, camouflage. one night on patrol I saw the back of the dmz sign hidden in the weeds, Oh crap we were on north korean side. High tailed it back to the right side lol. Always careful not to walk through those old mine fields at night. Mighty cold my patrol lying in the snow on a night patrol. Most enjoyable mission I volunteered to head up the support of the Sang Kwang Orphanage. Thanks to all my fellow soldiers for their support. We would have all the children come to the Camp for fire engine rides, games, coloring books ect. money donated out of my fellow soldiers pockets. All the time and work payed off to see the children's faces. The day I was leaving to go state side the children surprised me and came to the camp and sang me a fair well song and Mr. Yun Kwan Sik head of the Orphanage gave me a certificate of Appreciation. Tears rolled down my face that day.The certificate rendered me as Honorary Dad for the Orphanage children.

Comments: I was initially assigned to C Co. 1/38th Inf in '70-'71 which was located at Camp Custer right at the base of Charley Block. Poju-ri was just outside the front gate and the main village was Youn-gu-gol where all the activities were, was around a 1/2 of a mile from the Camp. I remember I frequented the the Moulin Rouge, the Paradise Club, the House of the Rising Sun, I believe if it was on the strip I went there. I had a lot of fun on my first tour and really enjoyed the local food. I often ate at the KATUSA Snack Bar because I came to like their food more than the Mess Hall's.
I also had two subsequent tours, '74-'75 and '84-'85. My first tour, our unit rotated on the DMZ with the 9th. My second tour I was stationed at Camp Liberty Bell (DMZ) for the 13 months and my third tour I was assigned to Camp Casey. I am an Imjin Scout, did more than my share of patrols out in the DMZ, did GP Ollette and fence duty. If you were one of my friends, on my first tour, then you might have participated in borrowing the Bn Duty Vehicle after our club at the Camp closed up and tried to cross Freedom Bridge to go party some more at the ville. We didn't make it and made a u-turn and went back to the company. I was the one who got caught because I dropped my hat in the vehicle and it had my name on it. If so shoot me an e-mail. That year we had a member who fired into the ambush site and we had to take the QRF Force in before dawn to medivac a wounded by deuce and a half back to the fence and then taken by chopper. We also had one of our platoon members who went souvenir hunting after we set up an admin bivouac site for reverse cycle training (which was supposed to be clear) and stepped on a anti-personnel mine from the Korean Conflict.

under the NCO Reclass/Retrain Program and was the Morning Report/Unit Clerk under
Floyd D Clark and Cpt Scott/Maj Ricks. ETS late 1978. Looking to contact Phil
Sanders, Doug Estes, others. Am concerned that there is an extreme poverty of
information on the web about this unit. esp. prior to 1980s. Please email me or on
FB as Vernon Weathers. Thanks

Comments: Oh My goodness. Just saw a video done in 2014 that Camp Edward West is totally gone. Im in total shock. It appears that they did away with all the tank walls? and the large Korean School that was behind the compound??
Never realized how much I missed korea. Was there 1972 -1973 and 1975-1076.
Shoot, even my house that was off to the right is gone. Well, it has been what 43 years. Guess its true you can never go home. And I wanted to retire in Korea. Too old to do it now.
